Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet
Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet (3 August 1821 – 3 May 1905) was a British clothing manufacturer and Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician. Public life Barran was the son of John Barran and his wife Elizabeth (née Fletcher), and founded the firm of John Barran and Sons, clothing manufacturers, of Leeds. He was a justice of the peace for Leeds and the West Riding of Yorkshire and served as Mayor of Leeds from 1870 to 1871. In 1876 he was returned to Parliament as one of three representatives for Leeds (UK Parliament constituency), Leeds, a seat he held until 1885, and later sat for Otley (UK Parliament constituency), Otley from 1886 to 1895. The latter year he was created a baronet, of Chapel Allerton Hall in Chapel Allerton in the West Riding of the County of York and Queen's Gate, St Mary Abbots parish, in Kensington in the County of London. Sir John Nicholson Barran, 2nd Baronet (16 August 1872 – 8 July 1952) was a British Liberal Party politician. Background and family Barran was the son of John Barran (1844–1886) and the grandson of Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet. His mother was Eliza Henrietta Nicholson, daughter of Edward Nicholson. He was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge, and succeeded his grandfather in the baronetcy in 1905. He married firstly, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Boston on 18 November 1902, Alice Margarita Parks, daughter of Reverend Leighton Parks, rector of Emmanuel church. They had three sons and one daughter. After his first wife's death in 1939, he married secondly in 1946 Esther Frances Fisher, daughter of New Zealand politician Frank Fisher. His eldest son Sir John Leighton Barran (1904–1974) succeeded in the baronetcy. His youngest son Sir David Barran became a prominent businessman and served as Managing Director and Chairman of Shell. The Barran Baronetcy, of Chapel Allerton Hall in Chapel Allerton in the West Riding of the County of York and Queen's Gate, St Mary's Abbot, in Kensington in the County of London, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 11 February 1895 for the merchant and Liberal Party (UK), Liberal politician Sir John Barran, 1st Baronet, John Barran. He represented Leeds (UK Parliament constituency), Leeds and Otley (UK Parliament constituency), Otley in the British House of Commons, House of Commons. He was succeeded by his grandson, the second Baronet. He sat as Liberal Member of Parliament for Hawick (UK Parliament constituency), Hawick and served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister H. H. Asquith. Two other members of the Barran family have also gained distinction.
