John B Nicholson
John Beauchamp Nicholson was an architect in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. A number of his works are heritage-listed. Early life John Beauchamp Nicholson was born in 1852 in Surry and arrived in Brisbane around 1876. Architectural career After working as a clerk and foreman for the contractor and later architect, Andrew Murphie and for plumber Hiram Wakefield, he set up an architectural office in October 1885. He worked in partnership with Constantin Mathea between 1886 and January 1887, with J Sinclair Ferguson and with Alfred R L Wright from March 1890 until going into involuntary liquidation in January 1891. During these few years, Nicholson's office designed a variety of handsome and substantial buildings including Lady Musgrave Lodge in 1891 and the 1888 Princess Theatre at Woolloongabba, though a good proportion of the work catered for the liquor trade and included a number of fine hotels and the Lion Brewery in Townsville. Normanby Hotel
Normanby Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel at 1 Musgrave Road, Red Hill, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by John B Nicholson and built in by Thomas Game. It was extended in 1917 to a design by George Henry Male Addison. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History This two-storeyed brick hotel was constructed in 1890 for Brisbane publican Elizabeth Sophia Burton, on land acquired by her husband in 1865. In 1872 the Burtons erected the first Normanby Hotel on the site, a modest two-storeyed building which fronted Kelvin Grove Road. It is likely that the hotel was named after the recently appointed Queensland Governor George Phipps, 2nd Marquess of Normanby. In 1889, the licensee William Valentine (son-in-law of the Burtons) decided to demolish the hotel to make way for the newer larger hotel facing Musgrave Road. Red Hill is an inner northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Red Hill had a population of 5,560 people. Geography Red Hill is by road north-west of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb is very hilly and mainly residential, with shops and small businesses located on Musgrave and Waterworks Roads. History The suburb is one of the oldest in Brisbane. Red Hill is named after its steep hills with red soil and rocks. A Baptist chapel was building in 1874. In 1888, the chapel was replaced by the Windsor Road Baptist Church. As at 2021, the church is still operating and the building is listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register. Circa 1880, 11 subdivided allotments of "Bristol Estate" were auctioned by J. Barger & Co. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 12 July 2005. History The Norman Hotel was built in 1889 for Robert Heaslop to a design from the office of John Beauchamp Nicholson. It is a brick hotel prominently sited at the corner of Qualtrough Street on the busy Ipswich Road. In 1859, at the time of separation from New South Wales, the road between Brisbane and Ipswich was considered by the incoming Governor of Queensland to be the only good road in Queensland and is still a major thoroughfare. At this time, quite a number of Europeans lived around the junction of the five tracks that were to become the Woolloongabba Fiveways, though it was not then thought of as a residential area.
