John Thomas Ashworth (27 February 1850 – 20 October 1901) was an English first-class cricketer. He was a middle-order batsman and played two first-class matches for Lancashire. A regular player for both the Rochdale and Castleton clubs, Ashworth made his County debut against Kent on 3 August 1871. John Ashworth (footballer)
John Ashworth was an English professional footballer who played as a winger for Burnley in the Football League. Ashworth joined Burnley from local club Lowerhouse in August 1888. He failed to make an appearance for the club during their first season in the League. Ashworth eventually made his debut on 14 September 1889, scoring Burnley's goal in the 1–2 defeat away at Everton. Sir John Percy Ashworth, (3 February 1906 – 26 September 1975) was a British judge and barrister. Biography He was the son of Percy Ashworth of Ollerton, Bolton and Fradswell Hall, Stafford, and his wife Annie Isabel Brooks, daughter of John Close Brooks of Birtles Hall. He was educated at Sandroyd School then Winchester College before going to Christ Church, Oxford. In 1930 he became a barrister of the Inner Temple. In 1940 he became an intelligence officer. Ashworth served as Junior Counsel to the Treasury (Common Law) (one of the British government's most senior lawyers) from 1950 to 1954, and was a Judge of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales from 1954 till his death. John Ashworth (preacher)
John Ashworth (8 July 1813 – 26 January 1875) was an English preacher, manufacturer, and author. Early life Ashworth was born on 8 July 1813 at the hamlet of Cutgate near Rochdale, the eighth child of his parents, who were poor woollen weavers. He has himself told the story of his mother manufacturing a 'bishop' (pinafore) for him out of a pack-sheet, from which all her exertions could not wash away the indelible word 'Wool,' which therefore formed his breastplate. The poverty of the family was further embittered by the intemperance of the father, who, however, reformed later in life. The only education which John obtained was at a Sunday school. Career He married before he was twenty. The union was a happy one, but Ashworth and his first wife had years of struggle with poverty and care. Sir John Ashworth (born 27 November 1938) is a scientist and educationalist. Education He was educated at West Buckland School and Exeter College, Oxford. He obtained a PhD degree in biochemistry at Leicester University and was a lecturer and reader there before taking up a post of foundation Professor of Biology at University of Essex in 1974. His scientific research at the time focused on developmental biology and cell differentiation, with a particular interest in the slime mold. Career John Ashworth joined the UK government's Cabinet Office in 1976, where he acted as the chief scientific adviser to the government, initially on secondment, and then as an undersecretary in the Cabinet Office from 1979 to 1981. He became vice-chancellor at the University of Salford from 1981 to 1990, and then director of the London School of Economics from 1990 to 1996.
