John Arkwright (politician)
Sir John Stanhope Arkwright (10 July 1872 – 19 September 1954) was a British Conservative Party politician. Family life Born in London, he was the great-great grandson of the cotton-spinning industrialist Sir Richard Arkwright and the son of John Hungerford Arkwright. His uncle, Richard Arkwright, was Member of Parliament (MP) for Leominster. In 1910, he sold his family home, Hampton Court, near Leominster and purchased Kinsham Court. Career At the 1900 general election he was elected as MP for Hereford, a position he served in until his resignation in 1912. In April 1902 he was appointed private secretary (unpaid) to Gerald Balfour, President of the Board of Trade. He was the author of the hymn 'O Valiant Hearts' written to honour the war dead of World War I. William Hewins
William Albert Samuel Hewins (11 May 1865 – 17 November 1931) was a British economist and Conservative politician. In 1895, he was appointed by Sidney Webb as the first Director of the London School of Economics, a post he held until 1903. Family and education Hewins was the son of Samuel Hewins, an iron merchant. He was educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School and Pembroke College, University of Oxford. He graduated with a degree in mathematics and later worked as a university extension lecturer. Politics Hewins resigned from teaching to work for Joseph Chamberlain and his campaign for tariff reform. He unsuccessfully contested Shipley in 1910 and Middleton in 1912 but was successfully returned to Parliament for Hereford in a 1912 by-election. Charles Cooke (Conservative Politician)
Charles Wallwyn Radcliffe Cooke (1841 – 26 May 1911) was an English farmer and cider producer and a Conservative Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892 and from 1893 to 1900. Biography Cooke was the son of Robert Duffield Cooke of Hellens, Herefordshire. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, becoming "Le Bas" Prizeman in 1864, and "Burney" Prizeman in 1866 and 1867 for English Essays. In 1869 he co-wrote with Angelina Gushington ''Thoughts on Men and Things: A Series of Essays''. In 1872, he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn, but showed a greater interest in farming in Herefordshire.
