John A. Lentz House
John A. Lentz House is a historic home located at Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. It was built in 1890, and is a two-story, three-bay, frame dwelling with Classical Revival style design elements. It features a full-length, two-level front porch with Tuscan Doric order columns. It has a two-story rear ell and one-story wing. It was the home of John A. Lentz (1860-1925), who served as Hickory's mayor in 1911–1912. Hickory, North Carolina
Hickory is a city located primarily in Catawba County, with formal boundaries extending into Burke and Caldwell counties. The city lies in the U.S. state of North Carolina. At the time of the 2020 census, Hickory's population was 43,490. Hickory is the principal city of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area, in which the metro population at the 2020 census was 365,276. Hickory is located approximately northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. History The origin of Hickory's name stems from a tavern made of logs beneath a hickory tree during the 1850s. The spot was known as "Hickory Tavern." In 1870, Hickory Tavern was established as a town. Three years later in 1873, the name was changed to the Town of Hickory, and in 1889 to the City of Hickory. Doric Order
The Doric order was one of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture; the other two canonical orders were the Ionic and the Corinthian. The Doric is most easily recognized by the simple circular capitals at the top of columns. Originating in the western Doric region of Greece, it is the earliest and, in its essence, the simplest of the orders, though still with complex details in the entablature above.
