Georg Johannesen
Georg Johannesen (22 February 1931 – 24 December 2005) was a Norwegian author and professor at the University of Bergen. Background He was born in Bergen, Norway. He was the son of Knut Johan Johannesen (1900–1979) and Ingeborg Malene Olsdatter Skaalevik (1902–1981). Johannesen graduated artium at Bergen Cathedral School in 1949. He studied history, English and Norwegian at University of Oslo and took his master's degree in Literature History in 1960. He wrote his dissertation ''Vårmotivet hos Olaf Bull'' on the poetry of Olaf Bull (1883-1933). From 1960-63, he was a high school lecturer and 1964-69 a freelance author and writer. In 1969 he joined the University of Bergen as assistant teacher at the Nordic Institute. He was a senior lecturer in Scandinavian literature from 1977, associate professor in 1981-86 and in 1996 he was appointed professor in rhetoric. He drowned during 2005 while on vacation in Egypt. Knut ("Kupper'n") Johannesen (born 6 November 1933) is a former speed skater from Norway. Biography Born in Oslo and representing the skating club ASK (''Arbeidernes Skøyteklubb'' – later called ''Aktiv Skøyteklubb'') Johannesen won the World Allround Championships in 1957 and 1964, the European Allround Championships in 1959 and 1960, and won the Norwegian Allround Championships eight times (1955 and 1957–1963). He was Olympic Champion twice – on the 10,000 m at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley and on the 5,000 m at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck. He led the Adelskalender for a total of 1,100 days. For his achievements, he received the 1959 Oscar Mathisen Award and was elected Norwegian Sportsperson of the Year in 1960. Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen (born 28 August 1964 in Tórshavn) is a Faroese politician. He was the prime minister of the Faroe Islands, representing the Faroese Unionist Party ( Sambandsflokkurin). He took office, succeeding Jóannes Eidesgaard on 26 September 2008 and left office on 15 September 2015, after his party and coalition with Fólkaflokkurin and Miðflokkurin lost the general election on 1 September 2015. Johannesen is also a former international football player; he was goalkeeper for the Faroe Islands national football team. In the Faroese parliamentary elections, held on 29 October 2011 Kaj Leo Johannesen received 1979 personal votes. Glenn Johannesen (born February 15, 1962 in La Ronge, Saskatchewan and raised in North Battleford, Saskatchewan) is a retired professional ice hockey left winger. He was a 1980 10th-round (206th overall) NHL Draft pick of the New York Islanders as a defenceman, switched to left wing, and later played in two NHL games for them in 1985. Eric Johannesen (born 16 July 1988) is a German former representative rower. He is a dual Olympian, an Olympic gold medallist and was a 2011 world champion. He was in the crew that won the gold medal in the men's eight competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Kim Johannesen (born 22 August 1985 in Bærum, Norway) is a Norwegian Jazz musician (guitar) and improviser living in Oslo. Career Johannesen has studied jazz performance at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo where he is currently (2013) studying for a Master's degree in improvisation. Johannesen Point
The Willis Islands are a small archipelago to the west of South Georgia Island in the South Georgia Islands. They are west of Bird Island, separated by the Stewart Strait. They were discovered on 14 January 1775 by Captain James Cook and named for Cook's midshipman Thomas Willis, the crew member who first sighted them. The Willis Islands were charted in greater detail and individually named by Discovery Investigations (DI) personnel between 1926-1930.
