Johannes Jacobse Beekman
Johannes "John" Jacobse Beekman (August 8, 1733 – December 17, 1802) was a New York politician and businessman of Dutch descent. He served as Mayor of Albany, New York and a member of the New York State Assembly. Early life Beekman was born on August 8, 1733. He was the youngest of six children born to Debora ( Hansen) Beekman and Jacob Beekman (1685–1739), an Albany businessman and blacksmith. His sister, Debora Beekman, married Gerrit Staats. His paternal grandparents were Johannes Beekman, who was married to Machtel ( Schermerhorn) Beekman. His aunt, Maritje "Mary" Beekman, was the wife of Arnout Schermerhorn (grandparents of merchant Peter Schermerhorn and great-grandparents of Abraham Schermerhorn). Mayor Of Albany, New York
From its formal chartering on 22 July 1686 until 1779, the mayors of Albany, New York, were appointed by the royal governor of New York, per the provisions of the original city charter, issued by Governor Thomas Dongan. From 1779 until 1839, mayors were chosen by the New York State's Council of Appointment, typically for a one-year term that began in September. From 1840 on, Albany's mayors were directly elected by the city's residents. Beginning in 1886, mayoral terms began on January 1 of the year after the mayor was elected. Albany County Militia
The Albany County militia was the colonial militia of Albany County, New York. Drawn from the general male population, by law all male inhabitants from 15 to 55 had to be enrolled in militia companies, the later known by the name of their commanders. By the 1700s, the militia of the Province of New York was organized by county and officers were appointed by the royal government. Johannes de Peyster or Johannes de Peyster III (1694 – February 27, 1789) was the Mayor of Albany, New York three times between 1729 and 1742. Early life De Peyster was born in 1694. He was the son of Johannes De Peyster Jr. and Anna Bancker (1670–1740). Johannes "John" De Peyster Douw (January 20, 1756 – February 22, 1835) was an American merchant, lawyer, soldier and civic leader. Early life Douw was born on January 20, 1756, and grew up in his parents' home in Albany and their country home known as Wolvenhook on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about a mile below Albany. He was the eighth of nine children born to Anna ( Johannes de Peyster Sr., De Peyster) Douw (1723–1794), and Volkert P. Douw, who served as Mayor of Albany, New York, Mayor of Albany and a New York State Senate, New York State Senator and was a close friend of General Philip Schuyler. The streets of Albany, New York have had a long history going back almost 400 years. Many of the streets have changed names over the course of time, some have changed names many times. Killian or Kilian, as a given name, is an Anglicized version of the Irish name Cillian. The name Cillian was borne by several early Irish saints including missionaries to Artois and Franconia and the author of the life of St Brigid. The name is said to derive from Saint Kilian, an Irish missionary to Germany in the 7th century, who, according to the Acta Sanctorum, was born in Mullagh, County Cavan, Ireland c. 640. He departed for his mission to the continent with 12 apostles from Kilmacologue in the parish of Tuosist, County Kerry, Ireland. Schenectady () is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat.
