Johannes Hendrikus Viljoen
Johannes Hendrikus Viljoen (15 October 1893 – 5 December 1957) was a South African politician, member of parliament for the constituencies of Hoopstad (1933-1941) and Vryburg (1948-1957), Minister of Mines (1950-1953), Education, Arts and Sciences (1950-1957), Social Affairs (1953-1954), Forestry (1954-1956) and Health (1956-1957) in both Dr Malan's and Advocate Strijdom's cabinets in South Africa. Political career Viljoen was the son of JH (Jan) Viljoen (1869-1955), a veteran of the Second Boer War and of his wife, Lenie Maré. JH Viljoen jr. was successively a member of the National Party, of the United Party (1934-1941), of the Afrikaner Party (1941-1943) then again of the National Party. Daniel François Malan
Daniël François Malan (; 22 May 1874 – 7 February 1959) was a South African politician who served as the fourth prime minister of South Africa from 1948 to 1954. The National Party implemented the system of apartheid, which enforced racial segregation laws, during his tenure as Prime Minister. Early life Malan was born in Riebeek-West in the Cape Colony. The progenitor of the Malan name in the South African region was a French Huguenot refugee named Jacques Malan from Provence (Mérindol), France, who arrived at the Cape before 1689. The Malan name is one of a number of Afrikaans names of French origin which have retained their original spelling. Malan's older sister, Cinie, later became a missionary and linguist. Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom (also spelled Strydom in accordance with Afrikaans spelling; 14 July 1893 – 24 August 1958), also known as Hans Strijdom and nicknamed the Lion of the North or the Lion of Waterberg, was the fifth prime minister of South Africa from 30 November 1954 to his death on 24 August 1958. He was an uncompromising Afrikaner nationalist and a member of the largest, ''baasskap'' (white supremacist) faction of the National Party (NP), who further accentuated the NP's apartheid policies and break with the Union of South Africa in favour of a republic during his rule. Wesselsbron
Wesselsbron is a small maize farming town 75 kilometres south of Bothaville in Free State province of South Africa. Town 32 km east of Hoopstad and 48 km north-west of Welkom. It was laid out in 1920 and became a municipality in 1936. Named after Commandant Cornelis J Wessels who was in command of the Siege of Kimberley from 13 October 1899 to 12 February 1900. Bron is Afrikaans for ‘source’, ‘spring’. Wesselsbron has a vast district which stretches from the Vet River in the south to the Vaal River in the north. The main cultivation is corn, but also wheat, sunflower and peanuts are cultivated. The grain silos of Senwes are the biggest silo complex in the Southern Hemisphere and can cope with the enormous amount of 275,000 tons of grain.
