Johann Vogel (composer)
Johann Christoph Vogel (also given as Fogel) (18 March 1756, in Nuremberg – 28 June 1788, in Paris) was a German composer. Life He spent most of his life working in France. He moved to Paris in 1776, and entered the service of the Duke of Montmorency and then of the Count of Valentinois as a horn player. He composed a great number of orchestral and chamber works but is best remembered for his oratorio ''Jephté'', performed at the Concert Spirituel in September 1781, and for his two operas. Although his music was received favourably, his works never became extremely popular because they were deemed as 'too complicated and baroque'. Vogel was an enthusiast for the operas of Gluck, and his first opera, '' La toison d'or'', is dedicated to the composer as 'législateur de la musique'. In places it appears to be a faithful stylistic imitation of Gluck's two Iphigenia operas, ''Iphigénie en Tauride'' and ''Iphigenie auf Tauris '', but with a fuller orchestration and a greater lyric ...

''The New Grove Dictionary of Opera'' is an encyclopedia of opera, considered to be one of the best general reference sources on the subject. It is the largest work on opera in English, and in its printed form, amounts to 5,448 pages in four volumes. First published in 1992 by Macmillan Reference, London, it was edited by Stanley Sadie with contributions from over 1,300 scholars. There are 11,000 articles in total, covering over 2,900 composers and 1800 operas. Appendices including an index of role names and an index of incipits of arias, ensembles, and opera pieces. Arnold Jacobshagen
Arnold Jacobshagen (born 30 December 1965) is a German musicologist. He has been teaching at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln since 2006. Career Born in Marburg, Jacobshagen studied musicology, history and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin (with Jürgen Maehder), the University of Vienna and Paris as well as culture and media management at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". In 1996 he received his doctorate at the Free University. He then worked as a music dramaturg at the Staatstheater Mainz. He later held a scholarship at the German Historical Institute in Rome and at the . From 1997 to 2006 he worked as a research assistant at the Forschungsinstitut für Musiktheater of the University of Bayreuth. In 2003 he completed his habilitation there (Sieghart Döhring). Pierre Gardel
Pierre-Gabriel Gardel (4 February 1758, in Nancy, France – 18 October 1840, in Paris) was a French ballet dancer, ballet master, violinist, and composer., 2007. He was the younger brother of Maximilien Gardel, seventeen years his senior. In 1795 he married the dancer Marie Miller, whom he showcased in many of his works. Career Entering the school of the Opéra de Paris (Paris Opera) in 1772, he began his studies under his brother's watch. He became a soloist in 1780, but had to give up his performing career for health reasons, paired with the rising jealousy of his contemporary Auguste Vestris, who was a natural technician. Overture (from French ''ouverture'', "opening") in music was originally the instrumental introduction to a ballet, opera, or oratorio in the 17th century.
