Joel R. Carpenter
Joel R. Carpenter (1819? - January 1892) was an American attorney from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin who served a single term in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Background He came to Oconomowoc in 1848, and was the first practicing lawyer there. In 1855, he was a justice of the peace in that town. Legislature Carpenter was elected in 1863 for a single one-year term as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from the 2nd Waukesha County district (the Towns of Merton, Oconomowoc, Summit, and Delafield), defeating Democrat John D. McDonald (Democratic incumbent Elisha W. Edgerton was not a candidate). He was assigned to the standing committees on expiration and re-enactment of laws, and on privileges and elections. Oconomowoc ( ) is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The name was derived from Coo-no-mo-wauk, the Potawatomi term for "waterfall." The population was 15,712 at the 2010 census. The city is partially adjacent to the Town of Oconomowoc and near the village of Oconomowoc Lake, Wisconsin. History Before 1700, this region was inhabited by Potawatomi peoples descended from Woodland Indians known as "mound builders". The National Union Party was the temporary name used by the Republican Party and elements of other parties for the national ticket in the 1864 presidential election that was held during the Civil War. For the most part, state Republican parties did not change their name. The temporary name was used to attract War Democrats, border state voters, Unconditional Unionist, and Unionist Party members who might otherwise have not voted for the Republican Party.
