Joel Ashton McCarthy is a Canadian film director. Career McCarthy's debut feature, the documentary ''Taking My Parents to Burning Man'' (2014), successfully crowdfunded $10,000 and won multiple awards. In 2016, McCarthy won a Leo Award for directing the Crazy8s short film ''I Love You So Much It's Killing Them''. In 2017, he was nominated for a Gotham Award for his series, ''Inconceivable'', which won $50,000 from Telus Storyhive. McCarthy later founded and ran the Vancouver 48-hour Run N Gun film competition. Taking My Parents To Burning Man
''Taking My Parents to Burning Man'' is a 2014 Canadian documentary film directed by Joel Ashton McCarthy and Bryant H. Boesen that follows the latter's adventures with his 60-year-old parents at Burning Man. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation, journey and adventures at the "least-likely family vacation imaginable." Production Boesen wanted to make a documentary about Burning Man to help define it for people who have never been. According to Boesen, it was his parents' decision to attend Burning Man; as he was planning to shoot a documentary anyway and they were already attending, he asked if he could follow them on their first visit. Boesen approached McCarthy while the two were finishing film school to make the documentary. In April 2012, after McCarthy maxed out two credit cards, the pair launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Crazy8s is a filmmaking competition and festival held annually in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It provides funding and support to local filmmakers to shoot and edit a short film in eight days. It has been called one of the best platforms for emerging filmmakers in Vancouver and has produced over 100 short films. History Crazy8s was founded in 1999 by Andrew Williamson. Teams of filmmakers pitch their concepts to industry professionals. Around 200 teams annually submit a video pitch, 40 are then chosen to pitch in-person to a jury, after that 12 teams advance to the script stage before six finalists are announced in early January. After fine-tuning their concepts and delivering revised scripts, 6 winners are chosen to receive $1,000 and a production package and have three days to shoot followed by five days of post-production.
