Joseph Henry West (born October 31, 1952), nicknamed "Cowboy Joe" or "Country Joe", is an American former Major League Baseball umpire. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he grew up in Greenville and played football at East Carolina University (ECU) and Elon College. West entered the National League as an umpire in 1976; he joined the NL staff full-time in 1978. West wore uniform number 22 throughout his career. As a young umpire, West worked Nolan Ryan's fifth career no-hitter, was on the field for Willie McCovey's 500th home run, and was involved in a 1983 pushing incident with manager Joe Torre. On May 25, 2021, West broke Bill Klem's all-time record by umpiring his 5,376th game. West resigned during the 1999 Major League Umpires Association mass resignation, but was rehired in 2002. Joe Davis West Jr. (born February 1, 1984) is an American former professional football wide receiver. He was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football at Texas-El Paso. West was also a member of the New Orleans Saints, Sacramento Mountain Lions, St. Louis Rams, and Calgary Stampeders. Joseph West (1910–1965) was an English footballer who played as a forward in the Football League for Cardiff City and Darlington. Life and career West was born in 1910 in Walker, Northumberland, the sixth child of Joseph West, a colliery deputy, and his wife Alice. He played football as a centre forward for Walker Park, from where he signed for Newcastle United in May 1932 after scoring all five Newcastle goals in a trial appearance in a friendly match. He spent 18 months with the club, never appeared for the first team, and, described as a speedy inside forward, moved on to Cardiff City in November 1933. He made six appearances in the Third Division South and scored twice, in a 3–1 defeat to Luton Town in December and a 4–2 victory over Bournemouth in January 1934, and was released on a free transfer at the end of the season. Joseph West (born ? died 1691), was an English ship captain, and an early Colonial governor of South Carolina. Biography Early life Nothing is known of the circumstances of his birth or early years. In 1667 he was commissioned captain of , seeing service in the Second Anglo-Dutch War.''The South Carolina Encyclopedia'', p. 1015 West was probably attached to the service of one of the eight proprietors of Carolina, chief among whom were the Duke of Albemarle and Lord Shaftesbury. From his correspondence, preserved at the Public Record Office, his relations appear to have been specially close with the latter.
