Joe Shirley Jr.
Joe Shirley Jr. (born December 4, 1947) is a Navajo politician who is the only two-term President of the Navajo Nation. He served as president from 2003 to 2011. He lives in Chinle, Arizona, and is Tódích'íi'nii, born for Tábaahá. Personal life Shirley was born on the Navajo Nation in Chinle, AZ and raised by his grandmother since he was a toddler. Shirley is married to Vikki Shirley, MBA, and they have three sons and three daughters. Vikki is Kiyaa'nni born for the Ma'iidesh giizhnii clan. Her parents are Victor Moses Begay and Gladys Begay of Lukachukai, Arizona. Since December 2001, after the death of their daughter to a drunk driver, the Shirley family has been heavily involved with MADD. Joe Shirley is a graduate of Chinle High School (1966). President Of The Navajo Nation
The President of the Navajo Nation is the head of state of the Navajo Nation. The office was created in 1991 following restructuring of the national government. The President and Vice President are elected every four years. The Navajo Nation President shall serve no more than two consecutive terms. As outlined in the Navajo Nation Code §1001-1006, until 2016, office holders had to be fluent in the Navajo language among other declared qualifications. Presently, fluency is to be determined by the Navajo voters when they cast ballots. It was founded in 1899 as the final public university established in the Arizona Territory, 13 years before Arizona was admitted as the 48th state. Russell Begaye
Russell Begaye is a Navajo politician who served as the 8th president of Navajo Nation from May 2015 to January 2019. He was the second New Mexican Navajo to hold the Navajo Presidency. Early life and education Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, Begaye graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974 with a degree in political science. In 1977, Begaye received his Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Career From 1977 to 2011, Begaye worked for the North American Mission Board. Begaye served on the Navajo Nation Council from 2011 until his election as President of the Navajo Nation on April 4, 2015. Chris Deschene
Christopher L. Clark Deschene is an American politician, attorney, and energy development expert. A member of the Navajo Nation, Deschene was the Democratic Party's candidate for Secretary of State in Arizona in 2010, and served as a Department of Energy official in the Barack Obama Administration. Biography Deschene was born in California, but moved with his parents, a homemaker from Dennehotso, Arizona and a welder from Tuba City, Arizona. Deschene spent his youth in LeChee, Arizona and attended high school in Page, Arizona. After graduating from high school in 1989, Deschene attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed on several missions overseas, including the Persian Gulf and Southeast Asia. Navajo Nation Presidential Election, 2015
The 2015 Navajo Nation Presidential Election was held on April 21, 2015, with the primary on August 26, 2014. Joe Shirley Jr. and Chris Deschene advanced to the general. Originally the general election between Shirley and Deschene was to be held on Tuesday November 4, 2014. However, two former presidential candidates, Dale E. Tsosie & Hank Whitethorne, who were eliminated in the Primary election challenged Deschene's candidacy over his fluency of the Navajo Language, a requirement to run for president. Eventually disqualifying Chris Deschene and his running mate Fannie L. Atcitty.
