Joe Pat Prunty
Joseph Patrick Prunty MBE (1932 – 29 January 2021) was a Northern Irish businessman and Gaelic footballer who played for club side Roslea Shamrocks and was a member of the Fermanagh junior football team that won the 1959 All-Ireland Junior Championship. Biography Born in Rosslea, Prunty was immersed in Gaelic football from a young age and was part of an Roslea Shamrocks team which won four County Senior Championships in succession from 1955 to 1958. He was also a substitute on the Fermanagh junior team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1959. Having left school at 14, Prunty worked on the family farm until he was 20 before setting up his own agriculture business. From there he worked developing his ploughing and drainage skills and eventually established Prunty Pitches, a company that became well known for developing GAA fields using a unique sand-based drainage system. Roslea Shamrocks is a Gaelic football club based in Rosslea, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. History The club was founded as ''Roslea First Fermanaghs'' in 1888. They were later known as ''Fág a Ballagh'', then became ''Roslea Shamrocks'' in 1906, the name they have kept since (except for one season, 1944, when a merger with Aghdrumsee gave them the name ''Dresternan Shamrocks''). Rosslea
Rosslea or Roslea () is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, near the border with County Monaghan in the Republic of Ireland. It stands on the Finn River and is beset by small natural lakes. Roslea Forest, also known as Spring Grove Forest, is nearby. In the 2011 Census it had a population of 528 people. History There were several incidents in the Rosslea area during the Anglo-Irish War. On 21 February 1921, a group of Special Constables and Ulster Volunteers burned ten Irish nationalists' homes and a priest's house in Rosslea as revenge for the shooting of a Special Constable. A UVF member mistakenly shot and killed himself during the attacks. On the night of 21 March, the Irish Republican Army attacked the homes of up to sixteen Special Constables in the Rosslea district, killing three and wounding others. Ulster Junior Football Championship
The Ulster Junior Football Championship is a junior Gaelic football knockout competition organised by the Ulster GAA. The competition began in 1914, with Cavan winning during the inaugural title. The most successful county to date is Cavan, who have won on fourteen occasions. The championship has not been played since 1986 with Tyrone being the last winners. A number of counties such as Cavan and Fermanagh have participated in the Leinster and Connacht championships in recent years. All-Ireland Junior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Football Championship is a GAA competition involving four Junior Gaelic football inter-county teams. Prior to a change in competition structure in 2021, the competition was previously for all Junior Gaelic football inter-county teams in Ireland. In this previous format, the definition of what constituted a Junior player differed from county to county. In some, the junior team was the second team after the senior team. This meant that any players who had not played with the senior team could play with the junior team. In others, such as Cork and Kerry, players could only be chosen from clubs that played in junior or intermediate grades. These counties could not choose players from senior clubs, even if they were not on the senior county team. When a team won this championship, it had to pick a new team for the following year. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
