Joe Lewis (baseball)
Joseph Herman Lewis (January 17, 1895 – October, 1986), nicknamed "Sleepy", was an American Negro league catcher in the 1920s and 1930s. A native of Drakes Branch, Virginia, Lewis made his Negro leagues debut in 1920 with the Baltimore Black Sox. He spent many years playing for the Hilldale Club, and was part of their 1925 Colored World Series championship team. Lewis died in Portsmouth, Virginia Portsmouth is an independent city in southeast Virginia and across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk. As of the 2020 census, the population was 97,915. Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. 1925 Colored World Series
The 1925 Colored World Series was the second edition of the championship series in Negro league baseball. The series featured a rematch between the Hilldale Club of Darby, Pennsylvania, champion of the Eastern Colored League (ECL), and the Kansas City Monarchs, champion of the Negro National League (NNL) and winner of the previous year's match in the first Colored World Series. In 1925, Hilldale won the best-of-nine series, five games to one. On the eve of the series, the Monarchs' star pitcher, Bullet Rogan, who had pitched a shutout in the deciding Game 7 of the NNL championship series, was injured while playing with his child at home, when a needle ran into his leg, leaving him unable to play in the World Series. Drakes Branch is a town in Charlotte County, Virginia, United States. The population was 530 at the 2010 census. Geography Drakes Branch is located southeast of the center of Charlotte County at (36.992958, −78.601714). Virginia State Route 47 passes through the town, leading north to Charlotte Court House, the county seat, and southeast to U.S. Route 15. Virginia State Route 59 intersects Route 47 in the north part of town and leads northeast to Keysville.
