Joseph Edwards (sculptor)
Joseph Edwards (5 March 1814 – 9 January 1882) was a Welsh sculptor. His work appears in many churches and cemeteries in England and Wales, in Westminster Abbey, and in the old town hall of Merthyr Tydfil. Seventy of his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1838 and 1878. Background Joseph Edwards was born on 5 March 1814 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales, the son of a stonemason, and went to school in Merthyr. At the age of seventeen he saw the collection of stone Celtic crosses at Margam Abbey and decided to become a sculptor. Apprenticed to a memorial mason in Swansea, he was quickly promoted to foreman. Joseph B. Edwards (1933–2000) was a Scottish painter. Edwards trained at Gray's School of Art, in Aberdeen, from 1950 to 1954, under Robert Sivell, then head of the school. After completing National Service he married Betty, who had also studied at Gray's, and moved to Home Farm, Kingswells, just outside Aberdeen. He regularly exhibited his work at the Royal Scottish Academy throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He worked in both oils and tempera. His work was inspired by his rural surroundings, and he was concerned with representing the human aspect of farming life. His love of the turn of seasons and the ever changing rural landscape is clear in his work. The rhythmic nature of the paintings evoke the cycle of nature itself. Joe Edwards (December 6, 1921 – February 8, 2007) was an American comic book artist best known for creating Archie Comics' mischievous little-girl character Li'l Jinx while working in the industry for over 65 years. Biography Born in the New York City borough of Manhattan, Edwards studied at art Rome Academy and the Hastings Animation School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where his duties including illustrating training manuals and, while based in Italy, cartoon warning signs of minefields around Naples. Edwards began his comics career with Demby Studios, one of the early "packages" who would provide outsourced comics on demand for publishers testing out the new medium of comic books in the late 1930s and 1940s.
