Joe DeSa
Joseph DeSa (July 27, 1959 – December 20, 1986) was a Major League Baseball first baseman. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 1977 MLB amateur draft, DeSa made his Major League Baseball debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on September 6, 1980, and appeared in his final game on October 3, 1985 for the Chicago White Sox. DeSa died in an automobile accident in the early morning hours of December 20, 1986 in Cayey, Puerto Rico. At the time of his death, he was playing in the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball League for the Ponce Lions. First Baseman
A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. Flexibility is needed because the first baseman receives throws from the other infielders, the catcher and the pitcher after they have fielded ground balls.
