Jody Upshaw
Jody Upshaw (born 2003) is a Canadian R&B artist. Career At age 14 in 2018, Upshaw released her debut EP. Upshaw released the single "Glitter and Gold" with teen rapper Shay Pitts that same year. Upshaw's single "Straight Shooter" was produced by Classified and released in 2018. In 2022, the song was featured in the season two premiere of ''Euphoria''. Upshaw was featured in the 2020 documentary short, "Youth Hiphop and Halifax", written and directed by Harmony Adesola for the ''Being Black in Halifax'' series. Upshaw was named Music Nova Scotia's artist in residence in 2022. Upshaw is slated to appear as a special guest for TLC at the May 2024 Moncton, New Brunswick stop on their tour. Lower Sackville is a community within the urban area of Halifax Regional Municipality, in Nova Scotia, Canada. History Before the European colonization in 1749, the Mi'kmaq lived in this area for thousands of years. In August 1749, Captain John Gorham, acting on orders from Governor Edward Cornwallis to establish a military fort named Fort Sackville. (The community was named after George Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville.). As the community grew, the oak trees that lined the main drive were cut down one-by-one due to poor urban planning. As more homes were desired, the farmlands made way for further urbanization. In the 1950s and 1960s it was a destination for Haligonians seeking entertainment at the drive-in theater, a harness racing track (''Sackville Downs''), and a World War II bomber-plane ice cream place. Luke Boyd (born December 13, 1977), better known by his stage name Classified, is a Canadian rapper and record producer from Enfield, Nova Scotia. Musical career 1995–2004: Early beginnings Boyd attended Hants East Rural High School in Milford Station, Nova Scotia. He started his own production label, Half Life Records, and released his first full-length LP called ''Time's Up, Kid'' in 1995. ''Being Black in Halifax'' is a Canadian documentary film and television series, which premiered in 2020 on CBC Television and CBC Gem. Created in conjunction with Fabienne Colas's Being Black in Canada foundation, the series selects several emerging filmmakers each year to create and produce short documentary films about Black Canadian life and experience in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which are screened at the Halifax Black Film Festival before being broadcast as an episode of the CBC's ''Absolutely Canadian'' series and streamed on CBC Gem. The series is a companion to ''Being Black in Toronto'', a similar collaboration between the CBC and Colas' Toronto Black Film Festival.
