Joaquim Miranda Sarmento
Joaquim José Miranda Sarmento (born 7 August 1978) is a Portuguese university professor, economist and politician. He has been Minister of Finance since 2024, in the XXIV Constitutional Government, led by Luís Montenegro. He served as a member of the Assembly of the Republic and president of the Social Democratic Party parliamentary group. He was president of the National Strategic Council under Rui Rio and coordinated Luís Montenegro's strategy motion in his candidacy for leadership of the Social Democratic Party in 2022. He was a former economic advisor to the former President of the Portuguese Republic, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, he was a consultant at UTAO (Technical Budget Support Unit) and worked for around ten years at the Ministry of Finance. Early legislative elections were held on 30 January 2022 in Portugal to elect members of the Assembly of the Republic to the 15th Legislature of the Third Portuguese Republic. All 230 seats to the Assembly of the Republic were up for election. On 27 October 2021, the budget proposed by the Socialist minority government was rejected by the Assembly of the Republic. The Left Bloc (BE) and the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), both of whom had previously supported the government, joined the centre-right to right-wing opposition parties and rejected the budget. Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, GCC, GColL, GColIH (; born 15 July 1939) is a Portuguese economist who served as the 19th president of Portugal, in office from 9 March 2006 to 9 March 2016. He had been previously prime minister of Portugal from 6 November 1985 to 28 October 1995. His 10-year tenure was the longest of any prime minister since António de Oliveira Salazar, and he was the first Portuguese prime minister to win an absolute parliamentary majority under the current constitutional system. 2022 Portuguese Social Democratic Party Leadership Election
The 2022 Portuguese Social Democratic Party leadership election was held on 28 May 2022. If no candidate achieved more than 50% of the votes in the first round, a second round would be held between the two most voted candidates in the first round on 4 June 2022, however, as only two candidates were on the ballot, Luís Montenegro and Jorge Moreira da Silva, a second round was not necessary. The elections came after the defeat of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in the 2022 Portuguese legislative election, where António Costa of the Socialist Party (PS) achieved an absolute majority. Rui Fernando da Silva Rio (born 6 August 1957) is a Portuguese economist and politician of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). He was the Mayor of Porto from 2002 to 2013. Between 2018 and 2022, he was President of the PSD and Leader of the Opposition.
