Joanne Butland (born 24 November 1978) is an Australian who has played association football, Australian rules football and international rules football. Association football Club career Butland played in the Women's National Soccer League for Canberra Eclipse and QAS Sting. International career She played four matches for the Australia women's national association football team in 1999 and 2000. Australian rules football After changing sports at the suggestion of her sister-in-law she soon became a star for North Cairns in the AFL Cairns Women's League. She was the league best and fairest four times in five years between 2003 and 2008. 2006 Ladies' International Rules Series
The 2006 Ladies' International Rules Series was the first and, as of 2019, the only ladies' International rules football series played between Ireland women's international rules football team, Ireland and Australia women's international rules football team, Australia. The series was played at the same time as the men's 2006 International Rules Series. Ireland won the series, winning the first test at Breffni Park by 134–15 and the second test at Parnell Park by 39–18. The series was broadcast live by TG4 and Setanta Sports. In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpires for being the Fairest and Best player in games during the home and away season.
