Joan Maude
Joan Maude (16 January 1908 – 28 September 1998) was an English actress, active from the 1920s to the 1950s. She is probably best known for playing the Chief Recorder in the 1946 Powell and Pressburger film '' A Matter of Life and Death''. The daughter of actors Charles Maude and Nancy Price, Maude's great grandmother on her father's side was the singer Jenny Lind, known as the "Swedish Nightingale". Maude was a cousin of the actor-manager Cyril Maude. Maude married firstly Scottish Rugby International player and journalist Frank Waters (1909-1954), with whom she had a daughter. In 1956 she married Oliver Woods (1911-1972). She was the writer, producer, and production designer of the short film ''All Hallowe'en'' (1952). Madame Yevonde
Yevonde Philone Middleton (née Cumbers; 5 January 1893 – 22 December 1975) was an English photographer, who pioneered the use of colour in portrait photography. She used the professional name Madame Yevonde. Early life Educated at the liberal and progressive Lingholt Boarding School in Hindhead and subsequently at the Guilde Internationale in Paris, as well as boarding schools in Belgium and France, from an early age Yevonde Cumbers displayed an independent attitude. Her heroine was women's liberationist Mary Wollstonecraft, and she joined the Suffragette movement in 1910. Upon leaving school, she returned to the family home in Bromley, Kent, and became active in suffragette activities, but realised that she was not cut out to be a leader in the field of women's rights. ''Turn of the Tide'' (1935) is a British drama film directed by Norman Walker and starring John Garrick, Geraldine Fitzgerald and Wilfrid Lawson. It was the first feature film made by J. Arthur Rank. Lacking a distributor for his film, Rank set up his own distribution and production company which subsequently grew into his later empire. The film contains many Whitby registered boats (WY) and contains much documentary-style footage of making and repairing lobster creels. Plot The film is set in the fictional Yorkshire fishing village of Bramblewick and relates the rivalry between two fishing families. It is filmed mainly around Robin Hood's Bay (evidenced in the WY identity codes on the fishing boats). The characters speak in the local Yorkshire accent and dialect.
