Joan Lyons
Joan Lyons (born 1937) is an American artist known for her work in photography, printmaking, and book arts. She is the Founding Director of Rochester’s Visual Studies Workshop Press. Early life and education Lyons was born in New York, New York. Lyons has a BFA from Alfred University, New York (1957), and an MFA frp, SUNY Buffalo, New York (1973). Career In 1971, Lyons co-founded the VSW Press at the Rochester-based Visual Studies Workshop. The preview material for a 2023 retrospective at the University of Rochester states, "Joan Lyons has been a fearless innovator in a wide range of historical and contemporary image-making processes, as well as newly invented reproduction technologies of the 1960s–1980s. A book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images, typically composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum, or paper) bound together and protected by a cover. The technical term for this physical arrangement is '' codex'' (plural, ''codices''). In the history of hand-held physical supports for extended written compositions or records, the codex replaces its predecessor, the scroll. A single sheet in a codex is a leaf and each side of a leaf is a page. As an intellectual object, a book is prototypically a composition of such great length that it takes a considerable investment of time to compose and still considered as an investment of time to read. Visual Studies Workshop
Visual Studies Workshop (VSW) is a non-profit group dedicated to art education based in Rochester, New York, in the Neighborhood of the Arts. VSW supports makers and interpreters of images through education, publications, exhibitions, and collections. VSW runs a bookstore, exhibition gallery, and research center. VSW was founded in 1969 by photographer, writer, curator and educator, Nathan Lyons. VSW is artist-run and an educational and support center for photography and other media art. Up until 2022, VSW ran a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program through State University of New York at Brockport, but this program has now been discontinued. Education Visual Studies Workshop offers a Master of Fine Arts program with a focus on expanding the potential for books as an art form. MFA candidates are joined into a community of producers that differs from a traditional class academic setting, with a range of backgrounds that is not exclusive to visual arts.
