Joan Geelvinck (Amsterdam, 7 August 1737 - Amsterdam, 2 July 1802) was, in 1787, mayor of Amsterdam for scarcely six months. He came to offices after two Orangist mayors were ejected in a radical way. Orangism (Netherlands)
In the history of the Dutch Republic, Orangism or ''prinsgezindheid'' ("pro-prince stance") was a political force opposing the ''Staatsgezinde'' (pro-Republic) party. Orangists supported the Princes of Orange as Stadtholders (a position held by members of the House of Orange) and military commanders of the Republic, as a check on the power of the ''regenten''. The Orangist party drew its adherents largely from traditionalists – mostly farmers, soldiers, noblemen and orthodox Protestant preachers, though its support fluctuated heavily over the course of the Republic's history and there were never clear-cut socioeconomic divisions. Hendrik Daniëlsz Hooft
Hendrik Daniëlszoon Hooft, Heerlijkheid, ''Ambachtsheer'' of Urk and Emmeloord (23 June 1716 in Amsterdam – 31 August 1794 in Loenersloot) was a Dutch people, Dutch politician during the Patriottentijd. Personal life Hooft was the son of Daniël Gerritszoon Hooft, ''burgemeester'' of Amsterdam, and Sophia Maria Reael. He was the scion of an Amsterdam patrician family that counted many ''burgemeesters'', like Cornelis Hooft and the poet and statesman Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft. He first married Anna Adriana Smissaert tot Sandenburg on 21 May 1744, who, however, died in childbirth on 30 April 1745. He then married Hester Schues on 30 August 1746. They had one daughter, Hester, who first married a banker (Clifford family (bankers), George Clifford)One of Hooft's granddaughters from this first marriage married Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp. and after she had been widowed, married admiral Jan Hendrik van Kinsbergen. Patriottentijd
The (; ) was a period of political instability in the Dutch Republic between approximately 1780 and 1787. Its name derives from the Patriots () faction who opposed the rule of the stadtholder, William V, Prince of Orange, and his supporters who were known as Orangists (). In 1781 one of the leaders of the Patriots, Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol anonymously published a pamphlet, entitled ("To the People of the Netherlands"), in which he advocated the formation of civic militias on the Swiss and American model to help restore the republican constitution. Such militias were subsequently organised in many localities and formed, together with Patriot political clubs, the core of the Patriot movement. Vroedschap
The vroedschap () was the name for the (all male) city council in the early modern Netherlands; the member of such a council was called a ''vroedman'', literally a "wise man". An honorific title of the ''vroedschap'' was the ''vroede vaderen'', the "wise fathers" Most early modern Dutch cities were ruled by a government of male burghers or ''poorters'' (bourgeois) who were members of the regent class, the ruling elite. During late Medieval times, the regents had in all cities gradually managed to exclude men of the artisan class from membership, making themselves a sort of hereditary city nobility. In the Dutch Republic, a city administration consisted of the magistrate and the ''vroedschap''. In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated.
