Joan Dukes
Joan Ivory Dukes (née Packham; 19 August 1903 – 25 September 1993) was a New Zealand artist and illustrator. Early life and family Dukes was born Joan Ivory Packham in Croydon near London on 19 August 1903 as the eldest child of Claude and Emma Elizabeth Packham. She attended the Croydon College, Croydon School of Art and received an Arts and Crafts movement-influenced training. After moving to New Zealand, she married (Russell) Lowell Dukes on 6 June 1936 at St John's Church, Dannevirke, and they first lived in New Plymouth. In 1948 or 1949, the couple moved to St Kilda, New Zealand, St Kilda in Dunedin, and then to Christchurch in 1952. Artistic career Teaching After her study at the Croydon School of Art, Packham worked as an art teacher there and in 1933 in Surrey. Christchurch Town Hall
The Christchurch Town Hall, since 2007 formally known as the Christchurch Town Hall of the Performing Arts, opened in 1972, is Christchurch, New Zealand's premier performing arts centre. It is located in the central city on the banks of the Avon River overlooking Victoria Square, opposite the former location of the demolished Christchurch Convention Centre. Due to significant damage sustained during the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, it was closed until 2019. Council staff initially recommended demolition of all but the main auditorium, but at a meeting in November 2012, councillors voted to rebuild the entire hall.
