Jirair Simoni Sefilian ( hy, Ժիրայր Սիմոնի Սէֆիլեան ( classical), Ժիրայր Սիմոնի Սեֆիլյան ( reformed); born July 10, 1967) is a Lebanese-born Armenian military commander and political activist. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, he commanded the ''Shushi'' special military battalion, playing a significant role during the Battle of Shusha. From 1997 to 1998 Sefilian was a Brigade Commander in the Artsakh Defence Army. He has long campaigned against any territorial concessions to Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh and against Russian influence in Armenia. Sefilian is one of the key figures of the Sasna Tsrer Pan-Armenian Party and the National Democratic Pole. Zhirayr or ''Jirair'' Hrayri Ananyan (Ter-Ananyan) ( hy, Ժիրայր Հրայրի Անանյան (Տեր-Անանյան), July 14, 1934, Berd, Armenia – April 24, 2004, Yerevan) was an Armenian playwright. He is the author of "Taxi, taxi" (1973) comedial play, one of the most populars in Armenia since 1970's. During one season it was staged in Soviet theatres more than 100 times. Biography Ananyan studied at Mikayel Nalbandyan school of Yerevan. He finished the historio-philological faculty of Yerevan State Pedagogical University in 1958. From 1959 to 1980 he worked at the Armenian State committee of TV and Radio. Ananyan's first play, "For a diploma" was staged in 1956. Jirayr Hamparzoom Zorthian ( hy, Ժիրայր Զորթեան) (April 14, 1911 — January 6, 2004) was an Armenian American artist. Biography Early life Born of Armenian parents on April 14, 1911, in Kütahya, Western Anatolia, Ottoman Empire, Zorthian escaped through Europe with the remnants of his family to escape the Armenian Genocide, and arrived in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1923. He earned a Master of Fine Arts at Yale University (where he had a "full college scholarship to the Yale School of fine arts") and studied art in Italy in the 1930s. Returning to the United States during the Great Depression, he painted several massive murals, including 11 for the Tennessee State Capitol in 1938 which earned him the honorary title of "Colonel". Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır (also known as Zhirayr Ohanian) (February 5, 1923 – 2003) was a chess player, coach, and former president of the Turkish Chess Federation. Life Of Armenian descent, Jirayr Ohanyan Çakır was born in Istanbul, Turkey on February 5, 1921. His father Avedis, who was from Merzifon, was the owner of the famous Markiz Bakery and was one of the biggest donors to the Turkish Armed Forces. His mother Anna-Mari was from Bursa and was a teacher at the Private Armenian School of Pangaltı and the Galatasaray High School. Ohanyan Çakır was introduced to chess when he was a student at Galatasaray High School. In 1943, with his classmate Turan Başak, he became a member of the school's chess club. Violinist Gerard Jirayr Svazlian was born in Alexandria, Egypt to Armenian parents. After the Second World War, in 1947 his family moved to the Soviet Republic of Armenia, where his father died at age 44. Since his father was an artistic personality, it was his dream to see three of his five children become musicians. Svazlian’s mother chose the violin for Gerard, the cello for his brother, and the piano for his sister; his two oldest sisters became scholars. Gerard started playing the violin at the age of seven and continued his studies at the prestigious Romanos Melikian Music Institute and Komitas Conservatory. During his school years he taught violin and played in the Yerevan State Opera Orchestra.
