Jimmy Smyth (Gaelic Footballer)
James Smyth (born 1949) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for the Clan na Gael club and at inter-county level with the Armagh senior football team. Playing career Smyth first played Gaelic football as a schoolboy with St Colman's College in Newry. As a member of the college's senor team, he won consecutive MacRory Cup titles as well as a Hogan Cup medal in 1967. Smyth simultaneously enjoyed success at underage level with the Clan na Gael club, winning three Armagh MFC titles. He subsequently progressed to the club's senior team and won nine Armagh SFC titles in a golden age for the club between 1968 and 1981. Smyth also won three successive Ulster SCFC titles and was part of the Clan na Gael team beaten by UCD in the 1974 All-Ireland club final. Clan Na Gael GAA (Armagh)
Clan na Gael Gaelic Athletic Club ( ga, CLG Clan na Gael) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club situated in the town of Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The club's pitch, Davitt Park, is named in honour of Michael Davitt, also the original club name. Throughout its 99-year history it has provided some of the most successful Gaelic footballers in Ireland. The club will be celebrating its Centenary in 2022. The club pursues the founding ideals of the GAA, namely the promotion of all things Gaelic - the Irish language, the culture, the games, the pastimes and the country. Ulster Senior Football Championship
The Ulster Senior Football Championship is an inter-county competition for Gaelic football teams in the province of Ulster. It is organised by the Ulster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and begins in early May. The final is usually played on the third Sunday in July. All nine Ulster counties participate. It is regarded as hardest to win of the four provincial football championships. At a referee conference in January 2015, David Coldrick said about officiating in the competition: "Ulster makes or breaks you. It can be a graveyard. The games are different. There is an extra dimension and intensity, and you must be at your best. If you aren't prepared physically and mentally, the chances are you will be caught out. The 1980 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 94th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter county, inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 11 May 1980 and ended on 21 September 1980. Kerry GAA, Kerry entered the championship as the 1979 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, defending champions. The 1977 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 91st staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 8 May 1977 and ended on 25 September 1977. Kilkenny returned to the Leinster Senior Football Championship. Dublin entered the championship as the defending champions. On 25 September 1977, Dublin won the championship following a 5-12 to 3-6 defeat of Armagh in the All-Ireland final. This was their 20th All-Ireland title and their second championship in succession. Armagh Senior Football Championship
The Armagh Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Armagh GAA clubs. The Armagh County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1889. Clann Éireann are the title holders (2021) defeating Crossmaglen Rangers in the Final. History The first official football champions of Armagh, following the creation in 1889 of the County Board, were Armagh Harps, in the 1889 final which saw the defeat of Blackwatertown in Armagh by a scoreline of 4-14 to 0-03. Crossmaglen Rangers have won the Armagh senior football championship on most occasions, with 40 victories since 1906, including a run of 13 wins from 1996 to 2008. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The Ulster Council ( ga, Comhairle Uladh) is a provincial council of the Gaelic Athletic Association sports of hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, and handball in the province of Ulster.
