Jimmy Smith (musician)
James Oscar Smith (December 8, 1925 – February 8, 2005) was an American jazz musician whose albums often appeared on ''Billboard'' magazine charts. He helped popularize the Hammond B-3 organ, creating a link between jazz and 1960s soul music. In 2005, Smith was awarded the NEA Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest honor that America bestows upon jazz musicians. Early years There is confusion about Smith's birth year, with sources citing either 1925 or 1928. James Smith (born 20 January 1947 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former footballer. Smith played for Aberdeen, Washington Whips, Newcastle United and Celtic. He also appeared in four international matches for Scotland, between 1968 and 1974. Aberdeen During his career he played initially for Aberdeen where he was popularly known as "Jinky". He won a Scottish Cup runners up medal in 1967, as Aberdeen lost to Celtic in the final. Aberdeen represented Washington Whips in summer 1967 in the United Soccer Association's inaugural season. In the final, which Washington lost 6-5 to Los Angeles Wolves, Smith was sent off after 30 minutes. His younger brother Joe also played for Aberdeen, winning a Scottish League Cup winners' medal in November 1976 when Aberdeen beat Celtic 2–0 in the final. Jimmy Neil Smith (born 1947 in Tennessee), is founder and president emeritus of thInternational Storytelling Center(ISC) in Jonesborough, Tennessee. In 1973, Smith, then a local journalism teacher, hosted the first National Storytelling Festival as a way to build regional and national awareness of Jonesborough. Smith's efforts led to a revival of storytelling in the US. Jonesborough is today referred to as the Storytelling Capital of the World. James H. Smith (February 1874 – December 24, 1960) was an Infielder in the Negro leagues. Smith played for the Chicago Columbia Giants at the age of 28, eventually moving on to the Cuban X-Giants in 1904. He played there for two seasons, then moved on to the Leland Giants for a few seasons. He then appears to have wrapped up his professional baseball career with the St. Paul Colored Gophers in 1909. Smith also wrote for the newspapers about many fellow players in 1910, not only giving opinions about their playing, and giving first and last names, but also helping to piece together where many of the players were coming and going during the season of 1910. He was an All-American college player at the College of Steubenville (now Franciscan University of Steubenville) and was a second-round pick in the 1958 NBA draft. Smith was born James Betsil and played his first two years of high school basketball at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During the Summer before his junior year, he transferred to Homestead High School in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Jimmy Smith (1910s Infielder)
James Lawrence Smith (May 15, 1895 – January 1, 1974) was a Major League Baseball infielder often referred to as "Greenfield Jimmy" or "Bluejacket". Smith was a switch hitter and threw right-handed. His major league debut came on September 26, 1914, with the Chicago Chi-Feds. In 1919, he won the World Series with the Cincinnati Reds, and he went on to play his final game with the Philadelphia Phillies on September 3, 1922. During Prohibition, Smith smuggled bootlegged alcohol from various cities into his Greenfield neighborhood. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
