Jimmy Rae
James Clarkson Rae (22 November 1907 – 4 July 1958) was a Scottish professional footballer and manager who most famously played for and then became manager of English Football League club Plymouth Argyle. Sammy Black
Samuel Black ISM (18 October 1905 – 1977) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside left. Often regarded as the greatest player to have represented Plymouth Argyle,Plymouth Argyle 101 Golden Greats, Andy Riddle he is the club's all-time record scorer with 182 goals. His career began in his native Scotland with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, where he was spotted by Bob Jack. He moved to Devon in 1924 and became an instant favourite with the club's supporters. The 1951–52 season was the 72nd season of competitive football in England. Overview Four years after guiding them to glory in the FA Cup, Matt Busby guided Manchester United to their first league title triumph in 41 years. While still captained by Johnny Carey and featuring several other players from the 1948 FA Cup winning team, Busby was now giving regular action to young players including Roger Byrne, Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower, and had already invested in the future by making a move for the young goalkeeper Ray Wood. Tottenham Hotspur, the previous season's champions, had to settle for second place this season. Plymouth
Plymouth () is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately south-west of Exeter and south-west of London. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and south-west. Plymouth's early history extends to the Bronze Age when a first settlement emerged at Mount Batten. Gordon Astall
Gordon Astall (22 September 1927 – 21 October 2020) was an English professional footballer. He played as an outside right, and represented the Football League, the England B team and the full England side. At club level he made 456 appearances in the Football League and scored 111 goals. Life and career Astall was born in Horwich, near Bolton, Lancashire. He was playing amateur football for Southampton when he signed professional with Plymouth Argyle in November 1947. He had previously been an unsuccessful triallist at his local side Bolton Wanderers. His league debut came in February 1948 at home to Luton Town, and he soon became a regular in the Home Park side, helping Plymouth win the Third Division South title in 1952. Neil Dougall
Cornelius Dougall (7 November 1921 – 1 December 2009) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as an inside right or wing half. He played more than 350 games in the Football League for Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, and won one cap for Scotland in 1946. Life and career Dougall was born in Falkirk, Scotland. He began his football career as a schoolboy inside right at Burnley in 1936, and turned professional in 1940. After the Second World War he moved to Birmingham City for a fee of £2,750. He helped the club win that season's Football League South war league championship and the Second Division title two years later. While a Birmingham player, he won one full cap for Scotland, against Wales in October 1946. Jack Chisholm
Jack Richardson Chisholm (9 October 1924 – 24 August 1977) was an English footballer who played as a centre half. Known for his leadership and physical presence, Chisholm is regarded as one of the best defenders to have played for Plymouth Argyle. He began his career as a teenager with Tottenham Hotspur but had to wait until after the Second World War to make his debut. He joined Brentford in 1947, where his performances earned him a move to Sheffield United the following year. He appeared for them in the First Division but was unable to prevent relegation at the end of the season, and he joined Plymouth Argyle six months later. Chisholm was soon appointed captain and helped them challenge for promotion to the First Division after returning to the second tier in 1952, as Third Division South champions. The Football League Third Division was the third tier of the English football league system in 1920–21 and again from 1958 until 1992.
