Jimmy Kennedy (hurler, Born 1926)
Jimmy Kennedy (1926–2007) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling at various times with his local clubs Kiladangan in Tipperary and UCD in Dublin. Kennedy also played with the Tipperary and Dublin senior inter-county teams from 1946 until 1951. Biography Jimmy Kennedy was born in Kildangan, County Tipperary in 1926. He was educated at the local national school and later attended St. Flannans College in Ennis, County Clare. Here his hurling skills were fully developed and he won Harty Cup and All-Ireland colleges titles in 1944. Kennedy capped off a memorable year with membership of the victorious Munster colleges inter-provincial team. Kennedy subsequently studied agricultural science at University College Dublin. He achieved his degree in the late 1940s and took up employment with Minch Norton Maltings in Nenagh in 1950. Kildangan GAA
Kiladangan GAA is a Tipperary GAA club which is located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Hurling is the main sport which is played in the "North Tipperary" divisional competitions. The club is centred on the village of Puckane but includes the areas of Ballycommon, Monsea and Dromineer near Nenagh. Kiladangan was formerly known as Kildangan GAA, however in January 2016 the club reverted to its former name of Kiladangan GAA. At the present time both club names are used interchangeably. Hurling club history From the foundation of the club in 1915, teams competed in the various championships in County Tipperary – Senior, Intermediate and Junior under various guises, namely Kiladangan, Kildangan, Ballycommon, Carney, Knigh and Lahorna. Thurles (; ''Durlas Éile'') is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is located in the civil parish of the same name in the barony of Eliogarty and in the ecclesiastical parish of Thurles (Roman Catholic parish), Thurles. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. Phil Purcell (hurler)
Phil Purcell (13 November 1902 – 2 February 1961) was an Irish hurler who played for his local club Moycarkey–Borris and at senior level for the Tipperary county team from 1926 until 1937. Playing career Club Purcell played his club hurling with his local club Moycarkey–Borris and enjoyed much success. He won his first senior county title in 1932. It was the first of four county victories for Purcell, the other three coming in 1934, 1937 and 1940. Inter-county Purcell began his inter-county hurling career at a time when there was no minor hurling championship. He first came to prominence with the Tipperary junior team in the early 1920s. He was captain of the team in 1924 as Tipp captured the Munster junior title. Purcell later captured an All-Ireland junior title as Tipperary defeated Galway in the final. Liam MacCarthy Cup
The Liam MacCarthy Cup is a trophy awarded annually by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) to the team that wins the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the main competition in the prehistoric sport of hurling. Based on the design of a medieval drinking vessel, the trophy was first awarded in 1923 to the winners of the (delayed) 1921 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The original 1920s trophy was retired in the 1990s, with a new identical trophy awarded annually since 1992. The original trophy is on permanent display in the GAA Museum at Croke Park in Dublin. The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship. The final, usually held on the first Sunday in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during May and June, and the results determine which team receives the Bob O'Keeffe Cup. Dublin Senior Hurling Championship
The Dublin Senior Hurling Championship ( ga, Craobh Sinsear Iomána Átha Cliath) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Dublin GAA, Dublin County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (Gaelic Athletic Association, GAA) since 1887 for the top hurling clubs in County Dublin, Ireland. Sixteen clubs compete. Initially the teams are divided into four groups of four with the group matches being played from April to May with a break to accommodate the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland Championship and resume during August or September.
