Jimmie Coker Holland (April 9, 1928 – December 24, 2017) was a founder of the field of psycho-oncology.National Library of Medicine, Changing the Face of MedicineDr. Jimmie C. Biography Born in Nevada, Texas, in 1928, Holland earned her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in 1952, and received her board certification in psychiatry in 1966. Nevada, Texas
Nevada ( , unlike the state of Nevada) is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 822 at the 2010 census, and 1,314 in 2020. First settled in 1835 by John McMinn Stambaugh and named "McMinn Chapel", the area was settled by Granville Stinebaugh, who named it after the Nevada Territory. Nevada enjoyed some prosperity after becoming a stop on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, and the town incorporated in 1889. On 9 May 1927, a half-mile-wide F4 tornado ripped through Nevada, leaving 19 dead, 100 injured, and property damage exceeding $650,000. The town had a difficult recovery; citizens voted to unincorporate, and placed the restoration of the community in the hands of the Collin County authorities. Psycho-oncology is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of physical, psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of the cancer experience for both patients and caregivers. Also known as psychiatric oncology or psychosocial oncology, researchers and practitioners in the field are concerned with aspects of individuals' experience with cancer beyond medical treatment, and across the cancer trajectory, including at diagnosis, during treatment, transitioning to and throughout survivorship, and approaching the end-of-life.
