James Morton (Canadian Businessman)
James Morton (August 29, 1808 – July 7, 1864) was a businessman and political figure in Canada West. He was born in Ireland in 1808 and came to Kingston in Upper Canada in 1824, where he learned the brewery business from Thomas Molson. In 1831, he set up a brewery and distillery there with Robert Drummond and became sole owner after his partner's death in 1834. He later set up a sawmill and bought several ships to transport his goods. In 1856, he was involved in the construction of a section of the Grand Trunk Railway. Around 1854, he set up a factory to build railway engines. However, by 1860, he was bankrupt, having overextended himself financially before an economic downturn in 1857. James Morton (chemist)
Sir James Morton FRSE LLD (1867–1943) was a Scottish pioneer of fast dyes. Life He was born at Gowanbank in Darvel in Ayrshire on 23 March 1867 the second son of Alexander Morton (1844–1923) and his wife, Jane (Jeannie) Wiseman. His father founded the weaving company of Alexander Morton & Company, employing 600 persons in the late 19th century. He was educated at Darvel School then Ayr Academy. He did not go to university and was trained as a chemist at Morton Sundour Mills in Carlisle, Cumbria, Carlisle, when his family purchased Denton Mills in that city. The company greatly expanded the use of Arts and Crafts designs in the late 19th century. James specialised in permanent light-fast dyes and moved to Scottish Dyes Limited around 1895. He went on to direct the dyestuffs section of Imperial Chemical Industries, ICI. James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton (died 1548) was a son of John Douglas, 2nd Earl of Morton and a grandson of James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton and Joan of Scotland, a daughter of James I of Scotland. He married Catherine Stewart, an illegitimate daughter of King James IV of Scotland by his mistress Marion Boyd. The couple had three daughters; Margaret, Beatrix, and Elizabeth. He was succeeded by his son-in-law, James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, husband of his daughter Elizabeth. His daughter Lady Margaret Douglas married James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, who was heir presumptive to Mary, Queen of Scots, prior to the birth of her son James in 1566. James Samuel Morton (born 22 April 1999) is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for club Southend United. He has played professionally in the Football League for Bristol City, Forest Green Rovers, Grimsby Town and Gillingham. He has also spent time on loan with Chippenham Town and Bath City.
