Jim McQuaid
James K. McQuaid (1920 – 16 September 1991) was an Irish road racing cyclist and later cycling administrator, coach and team manager from Dungannon, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, for most of his life based in Dublin, Ireland. From a family that became prominent in Irish cycling, he raced competitively, co-founded a cycle racing club. and served on the committee of the national cycling federation. Life McQuaid was born in 1920 in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, with one elder brother, and a sister. A Roman Catholic, he married a Protestant, and due to the atmosphere at the time in Northern Ireland they decided to move to Dublin in 1948, as Jim's elder brother Paddy had done a year earlier. Patrick "Pat" McQuaid (born 5 September 1949 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish road racing cyclist. He had a strong amateur career and a brief professional period, before moving into race promotion and administration in Ireland and globally, serving four years as head of Irish cycling's governing body, and later two four-year terms as president of the world governing body, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), and three years as a member of the International Olympic Committee. McQuaid is also a qualified secondary school teacher. Raheny () is a northern suburb of Dublin, Ireland, halfway from the city centre to Howth. It is centred on a historic settlement, first documented in 570 CE ( Mervyn Archdall). The district shares Dublin's two largest municipal parks, Saint Anne's Park and Bull Island with its 4.5 km beach, with neighbouring Clontarf, and is crossed by several small watercourses. Dublin Wheelers is a cycling club operating from the northside of Dublin, Ireland since 1933. As of 2022, it is based in Santry. History The club was established in 1933 by a group of six friends on a weekend away cycling in Rostrevor, County Down. The club founders were Eric Mason, David Perkins, Jim Doogue, Joe Walsh, Tommy and Leo McManmon. At peak a couple of hundred riders would depart from outside the offices of the Irish Press in Dublin. A touring section later developed, and the club ran well-attended time trials. The club was one of only 2-3 Irish cycling clubs to have a fixed base, in its case a converted bus on a site in Ashtown, near the Phoenix Park.
