Jim Mason (footballer)
James Mason was a 19th-century footballer and referee. He played for Burslem Port Vale and refereed the 1909 FA Cup final. Career Mason joined Burslem Port Vale in November 1892. He made his debut in a 5–2 home defeat to Newton Heath on 24 December 1894, becoming a regular from March 1895. In 1896 he was reported to be performing 'his usual trick act of shooting at the winding gear of the adjacent colliery or at the clock in the Cobridge Church tower'. He lost his first team place in December 1896, despite this ability. He was suspended by the club in February 1897 for 'offensive conduct' and only made one further appearance, in October 1897. Despite this he actually went on to become a referee after being released in 1898. Forward (association Football)
Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. As with any attacking player, the role of the forward relies heavily on being able to create space for attack. Attacking positions generally favour irrational players who ask questions to the defensive side of the opponent in order to create scoring chances, where they benefit from a lack of predictability in attacking play. Midland Football League (1889)
The Midland Football League was a semi-professional football league in England. It acted as a feeder league to the Football League for many years before merging with the Yorkshire League in 1982 to form the Northern Counties East League. History Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The eleven founder members came from six counties. In the early days of the Midland League, a number of the champion clubs were elected to the Football League, and in return, League clubs who failed to be re-elected were often placed in the Midland League.
