James Henry Lane (Union General)
James Henry Lane (June 22, 1814 – July 11, 1866) was a partisan militia leader during the Bleeding Kansas period that immediately preceded the American Civil War. During the war itself, Lane served as a United States Senator and as a general for the Union. Although reelected as a Senator in 1865, Lane committed suicide the next year. Early life The son of Amos Lane, Lane was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, where he practiced law when he was admitted to the state bar during 1840. During the Mexican–American War, he successively commanded the 3rd and 5th Indiana Regiments. He was a U.S. congressman from Indiana (1853–1855) where he voted for the Kansas–Nebraska Act. He relocated to the Kansas Territory during 1855. He immediately became involved with abolitionism in Kansas and was often termed the commander of the Free State Army ("The Red Legs" or Jayhawkers), a major Free Soil militant group. James Henry Lane (July 28, 1833 – September 21, 1907) was a university professor and Confederate general in the American Civil War. As its first Commandant, he is considered to be the father of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and is the namesake of the University's oldest building, Lane Hall. Early life Lane was born in Mathews Court House, Virginia. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1854 and received a master's degree from the University of Virginia in 1857. He was a professor of mathematics at VMI and then of natural philosophy at the North Carolina Military Institute until the start of the Civil War.Eicher, p. 338. James Tyson Lane
James Tyson Lane (April 10, 1835 – October 18, 1885) was an American lawyer and politician. Lane, son of William Allen and Catharine Lane, was born in Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, April 10, 1835, and He graduated from Yale College in 1855. After graduation he studied in the New Orleans Law School until his admission to the bar in April, 1857. In the succeeding fall he began practice in Richmond, now Tallulah, Madison Parish. On August 17, in the same year, he married Emma F. Lay, of Branford, Conn., who died while visiting relatives in Quincy, Illinois, October 8, 1867. He entered the Confederate army early in 1862, and joined the 4th Kentucky Regiment, commanded by Colonel Trabue, his former law partner. James Anthony Lane (born 1938) is an Irish republican and socialist from Cork (city), Cork. He was a central figure in left-wing politics in Cork city during the 1960s to late 1980s and involved in many campaigns. W. J. "Jim" Lane is an American politician and businessman who served as Mayor of Scottsdale from 2009 to January 2021, when term limits forced his departure.
