Jim Kempster
Ernest Arthur David Kempster known as Jim Kempster (9 October 1900 – 29 June 1945) was an international speedway rider from England. He was the first captain of the England national speedway team. Education Kempster attended Beaudesert School. Speedway career Kempster earned the nickname 'Smiling Jim Kempster' and came to prominence in 1928 when he won a race against Roger Frogley, in a match deemed to be the English Championship. Kempster had raced against the early Australian pioneers. He earned significant prize money during 1928 and won an International title in front of 45,000 at the new Wimbledon Stadium. Kempster was given the title of World Champion after the success because he had beaten the former title holder Sprouts Elder, of the United States. He joined the Wimbledon Dons for the inaugural speedway season in England. Leighton Buzzard
Leighton Buzzard ( ) is a market town in Bedfordshire, England, in the southwest of the county and close to the Buckinghamshire border. It lies between Aylesbury, Tring, Luton/Dunstable and Milton Keynes, near the Chiltern Hills. It is northwest of Central London and linked to the capital by the Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line. Air Transport Auxiliary
The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation set up at the start of the Second World War with headquarters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire. The ATA ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units (MUs), scrapyards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another and performed some air ambulance work. Notably, around 10% of its pilots were women, and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male colleagues, a first for the British government. The Rheinberg War Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Rheinberg, Germany. It was established in 1946 and is home to 3,330 graves from the Second World War. Wembley Lions (speedway)
The Wembley Lions were a motorcycle speedway team which operated from 1929 until their closure in 1971. Their track was located at Wembley Stadium, Wembley Park, London. The original stadium which hosted speedway has been redeveloped. Brief history Pre-war After opening in 1929, the Lions joined the Southern League (1929-1931), winning it in 1930 and 1931. The 1932 season saw them join the National League which they won at the first attempt. The Lions continued to compete in the National League until the outbreak of World War II . 1946–1957 After the war Wembley continued in the National League, winning the title in the opening season in 1946. The following season they retained their title. The Lions operated until the end of the 1956 season, winning the title a further five times (successive titles between 1949 and 1953) but in 1957 they withdrew from the league before the season started due to the death of Sir Arthur Elvin, the chairman of Wembley Stadium.
