James W. Delaney (December 18, 1928 – April 5, 1991) was an American stock car racing driver and crew chief. He was a pioneer of the sport, competing in the inaugural year of the Strictly Stock division, which is now the NASCAR Cup series. Racing career Jim Delaney made 11 appearances in the NASCAR Grand National Series, with a best finish of fifth. He spent the majority of his career racing in the Sportsman and Modified divisions, competing at the renowned tracks of the northeast, including Flemington Speedway and Wall Stadium NJ, Langhorne Speedway PA, and Orange County Fair Speedway NY. Delaney gained recognition as a respected fabricator and mechanic and, after he retired from driving, became a mainstay in the NASCAR garage area. James Delaney (August 26, 1896 – April 20, 1970) was the Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1929 to 1932. Biography James J. Delaney, Sr. was born in Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland on August 26, 1896. He came to Anchorage, Alaska in 1916 to work on the railroad for the Alaskan Engineering Commission (known after its 1923 completion as the Alaska Railroad). In 1929, he married Nancy Marie Dillon (born March 5, 1896, in Aghamore, County Mayo, Ireland). The Delaneys had three children: Nancy, James, Jr., and Loretta. In 1929, Delaney was elected to the first of three consecutive terms as Mayor. His first year in office, he successfully petitioned the General Land Office for the title to the land that would become Merrill Field. The field abutting downtown which was serving as an airstrip at that time was later renamed the Delaney Park Strip. James Delaney (3 September 1914 – 26 September 1989) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside right. He had a 24-year playing career interrupted by World War II, his longest spells at club level were spent with Celtic in Scotland and Manchester United in England. He was capped 15 times for the Scotland national team, scoring six goals. Career Club Celtic Delaney joined Celtic on provisional forms in 1933 from Stoneyburn Juniors, signing a permanent contract the following year. Delaney suffered the misfortune of a badly broken arm in a home game against Arbroath in April 1939. The injury sustained being further exacerbated by the opposition player Attilio Becchi (who was apparently a Celtic fan) accidentally stepping on Delaney's arm.
