Jim Coffey
James Coffey (27 January 1890 – 20 December 1959) was an Irish people, Irish heavyweight boxer. Despite only taking up boxing upon emigrating to the United States, United States of America at the age of 20, Jim rapidly rose through the rankings to become an acknowledged contender for the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, World title during the so-called "Great White Hope" era of the sport. Early life Jim Coffey was born in the small village of Tully in the north west corner of County Roscommon, in the West of Ireland. Although his birth is often listed at 16 January 1891, his birth certificate shows he was born on 27 January 1890. Arthur Pelkey
Arthur Pelkey (27 October 1884 – 18 February 1921) was a Canadian boxer who fought from 1910 to 1920. Born Andrew Arthur Pelletier in Pain Court, Ontario, the 6′ 1½″ Pelkey fought in the heavyweight division at a weight of between 206 and 210 lbs. He was one of the " White Hopes" of the time that African American Jack Johnson was the world heavyweight champion. The height of his pro career and its nadir happened simultaneously when on 24 May 1913, he met Luther McCarty at Tommy Burns's Arena in Calgary, Alberta for McCarty's World White Heavyweight title. Burns had been the world heavyweight champ who had lost his title to Jack Johnson, and the title had been created to crown a white heavyweight champ in light of the failures of successive White Hopes to wrest the title from Johnson. Loughglynn
Loughglinn or Loughglynn ( ; ) is a village in County Roscommon, Ireland. It is named after the lake to the north of the village. History Loughglinn House was the main residence of the Dillon family, built circa 1715, extended in the 1820s and altered again in the early 20th century. It is recorded in 1814, 1837 and in Griffith's Valuation as the seat of Viscount Dillon. The Dillons were absentee landlords for much of the nineteenth century and their agent, Charles Strickland, lived in the house. In 1806 Lord Dillon, Charles Dillon, 12th Viscount Dillon, raised the 101st Regiment of Foot, recruited from the inhabitants in and around Loughglinn. Harry Greb
Edward Henry Greb (June 6, 1894 – October 22, 1926) was an American professional boxer. Nicknamed "The Pittsburgh Windmill", he is widely regarded by many boxing historians as one of the best pound for pound boxers of all time. He was the American light heavyweight champion from 1922 to 1923 and world middleweight champion from 1923 to 1926. Jess Willard
Jess Myron Willard (December 29, 1881 – December 15, 1968) was an American world heavyweight boxing champion billed as the Pottawatomie Giant who knocked out Jack Johnson in April 1915 for the heavyweight title. Willard was known for size rather than skill, and though held the championship for more than four years, he defended it rarely. In 1919, when he was 37 years of age he lost the title in an extremely one sided loss by declining to come out for the fourth round against Jack Dempsey, who became a more celebrated champion. Soon after the bout Willard began accusing Dempsey of using something with the effect of a knuckle duster. Dempsey did not grant Willard a return match, and at 42 years old he was KO'd, following which he retired from boxing, although for the rest of his life continued claiming Dempsey had cheated.
