Jim Cahill
James Edward Cahill (15 April 1903 – 21 August 1978) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for one term from 1953 until 1956. He was also an indirectly elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 1965 and 1970. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Cahill was born in the farming community of Blackville near Quirindi, New South Wales and was the son of a schoolteacher. Cyril Cahill a member of the Legislative Council between 1961 and 1977, was his brother (but neither was related to ALP Premier Joe Cahill). Educated at Tamworth High School, Jim Cahill qualified as a licensed pharmacist. He owned a chemist's shop in Armidale and became involved in community organisations including Lions and the Chamber of Commerce. Quirindi
Quirindi ( or ) is a small town on the North West Slopes region of New South Wales, Australia, in Liverpool Plains Shire. At the , Quirindi had a population of 3,444. It is the nearest link to Gunnedah to the west and Tamworth to the north. The local economy is based on agriculture, with broadacre farming dominant on the black soil plains to the west and livestock grazing in the hilly eastern part of the district. The town is on the Kamilaroi Highway northwest of its junction with the New England Highway at Willow Tree. History The indigenous Gamilaroi people lived in the area for many thousands of years. The name Quirindi comes from the Gamilaraay language, with a number of meanings having been attributed it, which include "nest in the hills", "place where fish breed" and "dead tree on mountain top". Michael Quinn (Australian Politician)
Michael Thomas Leslie Quinn (23 October 1900 – 12 July 1965) was an Australian politician. Born in Homebush to Irish migrants Michael Quinn and Maria Gannon, he attended Christian Brothers College in Burwood, becoming a shop assistant. On 15 April 1932 he married Rita Munro, with whom he would have eight children. He began farming at Boomi, becoming a Boomi Shire Councillor from 1941 to 1959 (president 1952–1959) and Chairman of the Moree District Local Government Committee (1954–59). A member of the Labor Party, he was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1960 but immediately resigned from the party to join the Independent Labor Group, which opposed the official party policy of abolition of the Legislative Council. The 1956 New South Wales state election was held on 3 March 1956. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1952 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
