Jim Brophy
James Brophy (1920 – October 1998) was an Irish hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Galway senior team. Brophy joined the team during the 1940-41 National League and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement after the 1954 championship. During that time he won one National Hurling League medal. Brophy was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Brophy was a two-time county club championship medalist with An Céad Cath Gaelach. Playing career Club Brophy began his club hurling career at underage levels with Danesfort in Kilkenny. After moving to Galway he joined the An Céad Cath Gaelach club and went on to enjoy much success. The team were beaten by Loughrea in the 1941 decider and were also beaten in the county finals of 1945 and 1946 when city rivals Liam Mellows, for whom Brophy played for one season, proved their bogey-team. Roscommon GAA
The Roscommon County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Coiste Chontae Ros Comáin) or Roscommon GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Roscommon. The county board is also responsible for the Roscommon county teams. The county football team was the third from the province of Connacht to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway and Mayo. It competes in the Connacht Senior Football Championship, which it has won 23 times. The team won back-to-back All-Ireland SFC titles in 1943 and 1944. Danesfort Hurlers
Danesfort () is a small rural area in County Kilkenny, Ireland, located approximately 6 km from Kilkenny City on the N10 (Waterford to Kilkenny). It is also the name of a civil parish in County Kilkenny. The local area consists of one primary school, a local GAA pitch, a Roman Catholic Church (including graveyard). A creche, a community centre and a care home for the elderly. The townland is divided almost equally either side of the road. Danesfort's flag is the same colour (black and amber) as that of its county, Kilkenny. Politics Danesfort is officially a political region of Bennettsbridge, a nearby town. The townland itself however is considered part of Kilkenny City in terms of GAA structure, as a postal division (by An Post) and in terms of banking ( Kilkenny City Credit Union serves the area. Railway Cup
The GAA Interprovincial Championship ( ga, An Corn Idir-Chúigeach) or Railway Cup (''Corn an Iarnróid'') is the name of two annual Gaelic football and hurling competitions held between the provinces of Ireland. The Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Ulster GAA teams are composed of the best players from the counties in each province. The games are organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The Railway Cup was a revival of the Railway Shield which ran from 1905 to 1907 (football) and from 1905 to 1908 (hurling). The first Railway Cup competitions (the name is due to the donation of the trophy by Irish Rail) were held in 1927, with Munster winning the first football title and Leinster winning the first hurling title. Presently, Ulster hold the record for the most football Railway Cup wins with 30, while Munster has won the most hurling titles with 43. Jackie Power
Jackie Power (30 May 1916 – 23 February 1994) was an Irish sportsperson. A renowned dual player, he played both hurling and Gaelic football with his local club Ahane and with the Limerick senior inter-county teams in both codes from 1935 until 1949. He later played with the Kerry senior hurling team. Early life Jackie Power was born in Annacotty, County Limerick in 1916. He was educated at his local national school where he was introduced to the game of hurling by his teacher. In his teens Power showed promise at athletics, however, he decided to forfeit this interest and concentrate on Gaelic games. Playing career Club Power played his club hurling and football with his local club in Ahane and enjoyed much success.
