Jim Baker is a Canadian politician from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Baker represented the district of Labrador West in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Baker was first elected in a 2007 by-election, and was re-elected later that year in the provincial election. Baker did not run for re-election in the 2011 provincial election. Marystown, Newfoundland And Labrador
Marystown is a town in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, with a population of around 5,000. Situated 306 km from the province's capital, St. John's, it is on the Burin Peninsula. Until the early 1990s, its economy was largely based on shipbuilding, and it is due in part to this that the town experienced a population increase of 295% in just over a decade. The town was also dependent on the fish plant for employment. Though the shipyard still holds a presence in the town, residents have had to look elsewhere for economic subsistence in the last decade or so. The closure of the fish plants in Newfoundland has also had its hand in the decline in economic subsistence. The 2011 Newfoundland and Labrador general election took place on October 11, 2011, to elect members of the 47th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Progressive Conservative Party (PC Party) formed a majority government in the 2007 election, with the Liberal Party serving as the Official Opposition and the New Democratic Party (NDP) serving as a third party. Labrador West (electoral District)
Labrador West is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From 1975 to 1996, the district was known as Menihek. Known as the iron ore capital of Canada with two modern mining communities, Labrador City and Wabush, the district has a strong base of labour support. This district was the first in Newfoundland and Labrador to send a New Democratic member to the House of Assembly, electing party leader Peter Fenwick in a 1984 by-election.
