Jewish Criterion
The Jewish Criterion (OCLC 2262915) whose editors included J. Leonard Levy (rabbi of Rodef Shalom) and Charles H. Joseph, was one of two weekly papers for Jews in Pittsburgh. It was published 1895-1962, with the initial editor being M. K. Susman. WorldCat annotates it as the "Oldest English printed Jewish weekly representing Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia Jewry" A 1914 advertisement from the paper was used to substantiate the etymology of the word "pastrami." Rodef Shalom Congregation
Rodef Shalom Congregation is a National Register of Historic Places landmark in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, designed by architect Henry Hornbostel. Located on Fifth Avenue on the border of the Oakland and Shadyside neighborhoods, it houses Congregation Rodef Shalom, the oldest Jewish congregation in Western Pennsylvania and the largest Reform congregation in the area. Across the street from the temple is the headquarters of Pittsburgh's PBS station WQED. On the grounds of the building is the Rodef Shalom Biblical Botanical Garden. The ''Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle'' is an American weekly newspaper published every Thursday for the Jewish community in the Greater Pittsburgh Region. The newspaper is owned and distributed by the Pittsburgh Jewish Publication and Education Foundation. History The founding executive editor of the Jewish Chronicle in 1962 was Albert W. Bloom, then a reporter and science editor of the ''Pittsburgh Post-Gazette''. Bloom wrote the editorials and a weekly column "People and Issues" for over 20 years. Under Bloom's leadership, the paper became one of the leading Jewish papers in the US, and ran a number of prize winning series. Bloom continued as editor until his retirement in 1983, when he also served as president of the American Jewish Press Association. Joel Roteman succeeded Bloom and edited the paper from 1983.
