Jewish Community Vienna
The Jewish Community of Vienna (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien or IKG) is the body that represents Vienna's Orthodox Jewish community. Today, the IKG has around 10 000 members. Throughout history, it has represented almost all of Austria's Jews, whose numbers are sufficient to form communities in only a few other cities in Austria. Organisation The IKG provides its members with a range of services in social, religious, and educational affairs. It publishes an official newspaper (''Die Gemeinde'') twice monthly. The ''Contact point for Jewish victims of National-Socialist persecution in and from Austria'' supports and advises affected individuals and their families with regard to reparations and compensation. The current president of the IKG is Oskar Deutsch. On 1 July 2016, will succeed as Chief Rabbi of Vienna. Stadttempel Vienna September 2006 013
The Stadttempel ( en, City Prayer House), also called the Seitenstettengasse Temple, is the main synagogue of Vienna, Austria. It is located in the Innere Stadt 1st district, at Seitenstettengasse 4. History The synagogue was constructed from 1824 to 1826. The luxurious Stadttempel was fitted into a block of houses and hidden from plain view of the street, because of an edict issued by Emperor Joseph II that only Roman Catholic places of worship were allowed to be built with facades fronting directly on to public streets. This edict saved the synagogue from total destruction during the ''Kristallnacht'' in November 1938, since the synagogue could not be destroyed without setting on fire the buildings to which it was attached. The Stadttempel was the only synagogue in the city to survive World War II, as Nazi paramilitary troops with the help of local authorities destroyed all of the other 93 synagogues and Jewish prayer-houses in Vienna, starting with the Kristallnacht. David S. Shapira is an American businessman. He serves as Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President of Giant Eagle, Inc. He joined the company in 1971 and has been President and CEO since 1980. He has also been involved in philanthropic causes. Until 2009, he was the chairman of Carnegie Mellon University's Board of Trustees. In 1982, he co-founded Phar-Mor with Michael I. Monus. In 2012, his daughter Laura Shapira Karet took over as CEO for private company Giant Eagle, Inc., which was removed from the company by its Board of Directors in late March 2023. David P. Brill (1955–1979) was a Boston-based gay rights activist and investigative journalist. Brill studied political science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He was one of the nation's first investigative journalists for the gay press, and for more than six years served as chief investigative reporter and political commentator for the weekly ''Gay Community News'', chronicling issues relevant to the lives of gay people. Auschwitz concentration camp ( (); also or ) was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland (in a portion annexed into Germany in 1939) during World War II and the Holocaust. ''Arminio'' ( HWV 36) is an opera composed by George Frideric Handel. The libretto is based on a libretto of the same name by Antonio Salvi, which had been set to music by Alessandro Scarlatti. Moriz Pollack, ''Ritter von'' Borkenau (24 December 1827 in Vienna – 20 August 1904 in Vienna) was a Jewish Austrian financier. After leaving the gymnasium of Vienna, at the age of 22, he took charge of his father's wholesale leather business, and soon succeeded in extending his export trade to France and Germany. In 1857 he was elected to the municipal council of Vienna, and took an active part in the relief and construction works in the year of the great flood (1862). Soon afterward he took charge of the budget of the city of Vienna, acting as auditor until his resignation in 1885.
