Jewfish is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located in the upper Florida Keys on Key Largo off U.S. Route 1 (Overseas Highway). It is just west of the census-designated place (CDP) of North Key Largo. It has a hotel, restaurant, and marina. History A post office called Jewfish was established in 1912, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1921. The community took its name from the jewfish, a type of saltwater fish considered a delicacy. Overseas Highway
The Overseas Highway is a highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys to Key West. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000. The Jewfish Creek Bridge is a beam bridge in the Florida Keys. Spanning both Jewfish Creek and Lake Surprise, it carries the Overseas Highway ( U.S. Route 1) between the Florida Keys and the Florida mainland. The bridge is tall and opened in 2008, replacing a small drawbridge. North Key Largo is a census-designated place (CDP) in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,244 at the 2010 census. It includes two private clubs, the Ocean Reef Club and the Key Largo Anglers Club and is reached from the mainland via the Card Sound Bridge. Geography North Key Largo is located at (25.289586, -80.306813).
