Jesus Y Varela
Jesus Y. Varela (December 18, 1927 – February 23, 2018) was a Filipino prelate of the Catholic Church. He became the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Sorsogon on his retirement on April 16, 2003. He was appointed bishop of Sorsogon on November 27, 1980. Prior to that he served as the first ever sitting Bishop of then Diocese of Ozamiz. He also served as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Zamboanga and titular Bishop of Tatilti. Life He was born on December 18, 1927, in Bacolod, the son of Vicente Varela, a judge from Bago within the same province of Negros Occidental. He is a direct descendant of Gregorio Varela, a Spaniard who was one of Bago's founding fathers, and through Gregorio's wife Josefa Araneta he is a member of the Araneta family. The 'Roman Catholic Diocese of Sorsogon'' (Latin language, Latin: ''Dioecesis Sorsogonensis'') is a diocese of the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. The diocese was established in 1951 by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caceres, Archdiocese of Caceres, and in 1968, the diocese was subdivided after the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masbate, Diocese of Masbate separated. The University of Santo Tomas (also known as UST and officially as the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila) is a private, Catholic research university in Manila, Philippines. Founded on April 28, 1611, by Spanish friar Miguel de Benavides, third Archbishop of Manila, it has the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines and in Asia, and is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of enrollment found on one campus.
