Jessie Robertson
Jessie Marian Robertson (1 July 1909 — 22 June 1976) was an Australian radio broadcaster and community leader. Robertson was born in West Perth, Australia, to Scottish-born journalist Robert Robertson and his wife Agnes, who would go on to become a member of the Australian Senate. Jessie attended Thomas Street State and Perth Modern schools, and after training as a home science teacher founded Phoebe's School of Domestic Art in 1931. She was a radio announcer on 6IX from the mid-1930s and became known as "Phoebe the Early Cook" or "Aunt Judy" for her cooking and children's shows respectively. In December 1941, Robertson enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service and was commissioned lieutenant in January 1942. She transferred to Victoria in May 1943 and was promoted to captain on 28 July. Her appointment ended with the war on 21 December 1945. West Perth, Western Australia
West Perth is an inner suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Geography Formerly an exclusive enclave for wealthy merchants and politicians, the West Perth suburb is now part of the inner mixed zone, and has predominantly office blocks which have displaced residential buildings. The suburb has a relatively high proportion of miners, consultants, and especially medical specialists as compared with the Perth CBD. Streets such as Colin Street, Ord Street, and Outram Street have a significant percentage of office and high density residential buildings. Most retail outlets are located on Hay Street, which is the main commercial zone for the suburb, and these are focused on serving the office population. Closer to the CBD, the eastern edge of the suburb features both the Watertown brand outlet complex and the City West complex. Australian Women In World War II
Australian women during World War II played a larger role than they had during World War I. Military service Many women wanted to play an active role in the war and hundreds of voluntary women's auxiliary and paramilitary organisations had been formed by 1940. These included the Women's Transport Corps, Women's Flying Club, Women's Emergency Signalling Corps and Women's Australian National Services. In July 1940 in Brisbane alone there were six different organisations providing women with war-related training, the largest of which was the Queensland-based Women's National Emergency Legion. The federal government and military did not initially support women being trained to serve in the armed forces, however, and these organisations were not taken seriously by the general public. A shortage of male recruits forced the military to establish female branches in 1941 and 1942.
