Jesse Campbell (jockey)
Jesse M. Campbell (born October 9, 1977 in Twinsburg, Ohio) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey who earned the biggest win of his career on July 7, 2013 in the $1 million Queen's Plate aboard Midnight Aria at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. He is also the regular rider of 2016 Canadian Horse of the Year Caren. The son of trainer Michael Campbell, Jesse has a twin brother, Joel, who is also a jockey. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. The Bold Venture Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Open to horses age three and older, it is contested during the second half of July on Tapeta synthetic dirt over a distance of six and a half furlongs. Currently the race offers a purse of CAN$125,000. History Inaugurated in 1956 at the Fort Erie Racetrack, the race was named in honor of Bold Venture, winner of the 1936 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Midnight is the transition time from one day to the next – the moment when the date changes, on the local official clock time for any particular jurisdiction. By clock time, midnight is the opposite of noon, differing from it by 12 hours. Caren (foaled April 27, 2013) is a retired Canadian Thoroughbred racehorse. A multiple stakes winner at ages two and three, she was named the 2016 Canadian Horse of the Year. She finished her career with a record of 9 wins from 17 starts, and earnings of US$821,790. Background Caren is a bay filly who was bred in Ontario by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt-Meeuse of Shannondoe Farm. She was the first winner from the first crop of foals sired by Society's Chairman, who did not make his racing debut until age five but then became a stakes-winning sprinter. Her dam Jo Zak was unraced but proved a successful broodmare, producing nine winners from twelve runners. Queen's Plate
The King's Plate (known as the Queen's Plate between 1860 to 1901 and 1952 to 2022) is Canada's oldest Thoroughbred horse race, having been founded in 1860. It is also the oldest continuously run race in North America. It is run at a distance of for a maximum of 17 three-year-old Thoroughbred horses foaled in Canada. The race takes place each summer at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke, Ontario. It is the first race in the Canadian Triple Crown. The King's Plate has typically been held in June or July, but in 2020 the race was postponed to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The Wonder Where Stakes is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually since 1965 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. Held during the end of July/first week in August, it is the third leg of Canadian Triple Tiara series for Canadian-foaled three-year-old fillies. Raced on Turf, the Wonder Where Stakes currently offers a purse of Can$250,000. Since inception in 1965, it has been contested at miles (10 furlongs) except for 1994 when the distance was set at miles (9 furlongs). Ontario Colleen Stakes
The Ontario Colleen Stakes is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. Open to three-year-old fillies, it is raced on turf over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs). Prior to 2016, it was run in late August but now is run in late September. Inaugurated in 1979 at the Fort Erie Racetrack, the following year it was moved to the Woodbine Racetrack. It remained there through 1993 and then returned to Fort Erie for the 1994 running. Coronation Futurity Stakes
The Coronation Futurity Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race for 2-year-old horses foaled in Canada. It is run annually in mid-November at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at a distance of miles. Along with its turf counterpart, the Cup and Saucer Stakes, the Coronation Futurity is the richest race for two-year-olds foaled in Canada. Jacques Cartier Stakes
The Jacques Cartier Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race run annually since 1954 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Run near the beginning of the Woodbine spring meeting, the sprint race is open to horses aged four and older and is run over a distance of six furlongs on Tapeta synthetic dirt. In 2019, it became a Grade III stakes race and the purse was increased to Can$125,000 with an additional $25,000 available for Ontario-bred horses. Inaugurated in 1954 at the now defunct Greenwood Raceway in Toronto, the Jacques Cartier Stakes is named in honour of the French explorer, Jacques Cartier.
