Jess Stayrook
Jess Stayrook (born 1959) is an American professional bowler. He is mainly known for being the third bowler to convert the 7-10 split on television after John Mazza (1991) and Mark Roth (1980). Stayrook's conversion took place during a tournament televised on ESPN in Tucson, Arizona in 1991. Stayrook earned his first PBA national title in Seattle in 1989 and, after just two years of full-time tour competition, he established himself as a star with more than $100,000 in season earnings. He added two titles to his resume in 1991, and logged his second $100,000 season in three years. Stayrook's best year came in 1995, when he won two titles and $137,330 in season earnings, ranking him fourth behind Mike Aulby, Dave D'Entremont and Walter Ray Williams, Jr. for earnings that year. His last victory came in 1996 and, to date, he has earned nearly $800,000 in his career. A bowler is someone participating in the sport of bowling, either as an amateur or professional. In American ten-pin bowling, a bowler is most commonly a member of a team of three to six people. Most bowling leagues limit the number of team members to five, with alternates available as needed. There are a number of bowling tournaments held around the world, both large-scale international events and small local competitions. Split (ten Pin Bowling)
A split is a situation in ten pin bowling in which the first ball of a frame knocks down the headpin ("number 1 bowling pin") but leaves standing two or more non-adjacent groups of one or more pins. Scoring a spare in this situation is often referred to as a "killer shot". Types 7–10 split One of the most infamous of splits is the 7–10 split, often called "goal posts", "bedposts", or "snake eyes", where the bowler is left with the leftmost and the rightmost pin in the back row (the ''number 7'' and ''number 10'') to knock down with a single ball to achieve a spare. This is also one of the most difficult splits to pick up. There are three ways to convert this split. The first is to strike either pin and have it bounce out of the pit area and strike the remaining pin. This not only requires substantial ball speed but the pin must be struck in the right spot. John Mazza
John Mazza (born February 23, 1964) is a left-handed ten-pin bowler and former touring player for the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA). Mazza won eight titles on the PBA Tour and collected over $850,000 in earnings. He also won 11 PBA Regional Tour titles. Professional career Mazza became a PBA member in 1982, joining the full-time PBA Tour in the late 1980s. He finally hit his stride in 1991. That season, he won his first three PBA titles and the Harry Smith PBA Points Leader award, while cashing nearly $150,000 in earnings. He won multiple titles again in the 1994 season. Mazza is most notable, however, for being the second player (and first left-hander) to convert the nearly-impossible 7–10 split on national television. Mark Roth was the first to make this split on TV (in 1980), and Jess Stayrook accomplished the feat shortly after Mazza during the same season (1991).
