Jerónimo Saavedra
Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo (born 3 July 1936 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) is a Spanish politician. He served as President of the Canary Islands twice from 1982 to 1987, and again from 1991 to 1993. Biography In 1972 he joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), as well as the Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT). Being the General secretary of the Canarian Federation of PSOE from 1976 to 1983. Saavedra was elected deputy for the Constituent Cortes in 1977 and re-elected deputy in 1979, 1982 and 1989, representing Las Palmas. During the last Government of Felipe González (5th legislature) Saavedra held the positions of Minister of Public Administrations between 1993 and 1995 and Minister of Education and Science between 1995 and 1996. In 1996 and from 1999 to 2003 he was elected senator. In 2007 was elected mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in a landslide victory, bringing the twelve-year rule of his conservative People's Party predecessors to an end. An offic ... ''El Mundo'' (; ), before ''El Mundo del Siglo Veintiuno'', is the second largest printed daily newspaper in Spain. Esperanza Aguirre y Gil de Biedma (; born 3 January 1952) is a Spanish politician. As member of the People's Party (PP), she served as President of the Senate between 1999 and 2002 (becoming the first female politician to have held the post), as President of the Community of Madrid between 2003 and 2012 and as Minister of Education and Culture (1996–1999). Gustavo Suárez Pertierra (born 1949) is a Spanish jurist and politician. He served as Minister of Education and as Minister of Defence during the governments of Felipe González. Biography Born on 27 February 1949 in Cudillero. He earned a PhD in Law at the University of Valladolid. He lectured in canon law at the University of Oviedo and the University of Valladolid, later holding the Chair of Canon Law at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He briefly served as President of the University Socialist Grouping (ASU) in the 1980s. He served as Undersecretary of Defence from 1984 to 1990 and as Secretary of State of Military Administration from 1990 to 1993. He was appointed Minister of Education and Science in 1993.
