Jerzy Wyrobek
Jerzy Jan Wyrobek (17 December 1949 – 26 March 2013) was a Polish professional football and manager. Career Playing career Jerzy Wyrobek played for Stadion Śląski Chorzów, Zagłębie Wałbrzych, Ruch Chorzów and TuS Schloß Neuhaus. He was also capped 15 times for Poland, scoring one goal. Coaching career Jerzy Wyrobek managed Ruch Chorzów, Sokół Tychy, GKS Bełchatów, Odra Wodzisław, Zagłębie Lubin, Pogoń Szczecin, KSZO Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Tur Turek, GKS Jastrzębie and Zagłębie Sosnowiec. Chorzów ( ; ; german: link=no, Königshütte ; szl, Chorzōw) is a city in the Silesia region of southern Poland, near Katowice. Chorzów is one of the central cities of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union – a metropolis with a population of 2 million. It is located in the Silesian Highlands, on the Rawa River (a tributary of the Vistula). The ''Piłka Nożna'' Magazine Plebiscite ( pl, Plebiscyt Piłki Nożnej) is an annual plebiscite organized by the magazine journalists of '' Piłka Nożna'' (literally "Foot Ball"), the Polish football magazine. Participants choose the best player, best newcomer, best team, best coach and best foreign player in Polish football. The title of Polish Footballer of the Year has been awarded in Poland since 1973. The first player to be crowned was Kazimierz Deyna, midfielder for Legia Warsaw, while Mirosław Bulzacki was best newcomer. In 1982, Zbigniew Boniek became the first Polish footballer in a foreign club to receive this distinction. I liga ( pl, Pierwsza liga, ), currently named Fortuna I liga due to its sponsorship by Fortuna, is the men's second professional association football division of the Polish football league system, below the Ekstraklasa and above the II liga via promotion/relegation systems. The Polish Cup in football ( pl, Puchar Polski w piłce nożnej ) is an elimination tournament for Polish football clubs, held continuously from 1950, and is the second most important national title in Polish football after the Ekstraklasa title. Due to mass participation of teams, the tournament is often called ''The Cup of the Thousand Teams'' ( pl, Puchar Tysiąca Drużyn ). Participation is open to any club registered with the Polish FA, regardless of whether it competes in any league in the national pyramid. Reserve and veteran teams are also eligible, with reserve teams reaching the final on two occasions (and winning it once). The Cup is popular among lower-level teams, as it gives them a chance to play better known sides. In some cases, the underdogs even reached the final, with the most famous example being Czarni Żagań, which in 1964–1965 season lost the final game 0–4 to Górnik Zabrze. The 1978–79 I liga was the 53rd season of the Polish Football Championship and the 45th season of the I liga, the top Polish professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1927. The league was operated by the Polish Football Association (PZPN). The champions were Ruch Chorzów, who won their 13th Polish title. Competition modus The season started on 27 July 1978 and concluded on 10 June 1979 (autumn-spring league). The season was played as a round-robin tournament. The team at the top of the standings won the league title. A total of 16 teams participated, 14 of which competed in the league during the 1977–78 season, while the remaining two were promoted from the 1977–78 II liga. Each team played a total of 30 matches, half at home and half away, two games against each other team. Teams received two points for a win and one point for a draw.
