Jerry Mills
Jerry A. Mills (February 26, 1951 - January 28, 1993) was an openly gay cartoonist known for his comic strip ''Poppers'', which is credited as one of the first comic strips to develop multi-dimensional gay characters. Scholars have stated that while earlier comics had relied on stereotypes such as the nelly queen or muscleman, Mills presented his characters with lives beyond the stereotypes. His work is also credited as having helped shape comics for the LGBTQ+ community and its members. Career Mills created ad hoc cartoons and wrote an eight-page history of gays in comics for the first '' Meatmen'' anthology. In the earlier part of the 1980s, Mills worked in the subscriptions department of ''In Touch for Men'', an adult magazine company aimed at gay men. John Calendo, the magazine's editor and friend of Mills, promoted the artist to a regular comic strip. Established on June 18, 1905, Chicago’s Pekin Theatre was the first black owned musical and vaudeville stock theatre in the United States. Between 1905 and around 1915, the Pekin Club and its Pekin Theatre served as a training ground and showcase for Black theatrical talent, vaudeville acts, and musical comedies. Additionally, the theatre allowed “African-American theatre artists with an opportunity to master theater craft and contribute significantly to the development of an emerging Black theater tradition”. ''The Railroad Porter'', also released as ''The Pullman Porter'', is a film produced by The Foster Photoplay Company that was released in 1912 or 1913. It was the film company's first release and one of the earliest American films produced by African-Americans. Background It features stars from the Pekin Theatre's stock company. The company toured the film in the south along with its film ''The Fall Guy'' and Lottie Grady reportedly sang during the reel changing intermission. ''The Railroad Porter'' was written, filmed, edited, and premiered in 1913. It was the first film produced and directed by an African American and featured an African American cast. It included depictions of an African American middle class. Many of the actors showcased in ''The Railroad Porter'' were recognizable faces in days of black vaudeville.
